Free is signed throu 2016 but because a SB ist only spread out over 5 years he has no prorated one in his final year. So if we cut him right now we will take 3x $2.060.000 = $6.180.000 against the cap and free up 10.020.000. That leaves us with nearly $4mills of cap savings for 2013.
To me that is good amount of money saved.
If we cut Free after June 1st the left SB can be spread over 2 years. So esentially we take only 1/3 of the hit in 2013 and 2/3 of the hit in 2014. So cutting Free after June 1st we would save around $8mills against the 2013 cap.
Because Free would have had a base salary of $8mills in 2014 and a bonus of $960.000 we would save then around $5mills against the cap instead of the whole $9mills if we had cut him prior June 1st.
The thing i would do is ask Free to take a significant pay cut and let him battle for the starting position. He is due to $8mills in base salary 2013,2014,2015 & 2016. If we could cut that just in half and we could keep the player and safe the same amount of money this year. We can still cut him without the big SB impact next year if he doesn't bounce back.
