‘11 NFL Draft: Scouting South Florida

With the firing of Jim Leavitt, the only football coach in USF history, the Bulls are a team under new management as Skip Holts takes over in Tampa. The early departure of Jason Pierre-Paul to the next level along with seniors Nate Allen and Jerome Murphy means the cupboard is bare of any top NFL prospects. There are a number of quality late round choices and sleepers of note.
Center Sampson Genus is the highest rated senior on the offense at this point. Built low to the ground, Genus bends his knees then consistently gets leverage on opponents. He plays with terrific quickness and explosion yet little strength. Genus cannot finish blocks to the point of struggling with linebackers on the second level. He’s a late round prospect with limited upside.

Junior lineman Jeremiah Warren is a player to keep an eye on. The teams left tackle projects to guard in the NFL and is a fundamentally sound blocker with better than average strength at the point.

Defensively a pair of prospects on the line stand out.

Terrell McClain is someone we’ve watched since 2008 and though a nice player, he’s not had the breakout season we’ve been waiting for. McClain plays with good pad level and is tough to move off the point. Effectively using his hands, he moves well on his feet, displays a smooth change of direction and quickness in all aspects of the game. We perceive him as a one-gap/three technique lineman for the next level.

We presently rate Craig Marshall a bit higher than his teammate, though this is mostly based on potential. Marshall is a nice athlete at 6-feet, 4-inches and 265 pounds, displaying terrific movement skills and covering a lot of area on the field. He plays with balance, uses his hands well and is rarely off his feet. Problem is Marshall’s production; its’ terrible with just 20 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 4 sacks last season. He needs to step it up on the field but has the raw ability to do as much.
