Why would they do that? To test their kickoff coverage units or something? If so, just kick short.

You mean the Refs ignored it.

Sounds from the article like it was a form of protest.

If that's the case, I'm hoping they're fined pretty heavily. Protesting the rules by blatantly breaking them is pretty bush league.

Uh...okay. It's not as if them breaking the rules gives them an advantage. They were actually disadvantaged by using the old rule.

Well of course, they have Devin Hester so they're not too pleased about it

It basically nixes half his production. He's still got punts, but he's nothing more than a mediocre receiver if that.

I'd be upset if I were them too, but I'm still not a huge fan of blatantly breaking rules because you're butthurt.

Hester hasn't returned a kickoff for a TD since 2007. He did have a good average on kickoff returns last year though (35.6).

Devin Hester has returned a whopping 19 kicks in the past two season. He hasn't been the Bears' primary kick returner since 2007. Yeah, 2007. Danieal Manning has been their primary kick returner since 2008. The Bears appear to be protesting the rule because it's a crap rule, not because of Devin Hester.

Has it been confirmed that this is why they did it? Seems to me it's equally likely that they simply wanted to avoid a touch back and work on kick coverage. The coverage teams (and the coaching staff) don't really gain anything in preseason if the kicker keeps booting it to the back of the end zone.

Or maybe they're just idiots and were unaware of the rule change to begin with... I'm rooting hard for this to be the true explanation. :)

Hope more teams follow suit, it's a stupid rule.

But what if they get up too much speed and morph into Warewolves.

Not sure why I laughed so hard at that.

They should have another vote and see if it would pass again.

It’s a bad rule and i think it makes the NFL look amateur. Sebastian Janikowski was hitting the back endzone wall. I would rather just spot each team at the 20 to save us from wasting time.

Yep. Maybe if we're lucky we can get that set of commercials axed that happens right after the kick.
