I think it has to be Rise Against and Foo Fighters. Who else even contends with them for producing actual good music that have maintained such a high level of popularity? Every popular artist is either bubble-gum or gangster.

I have a man crush on foo fighters, I will not lie. The quality and longevity is hard to match in recent times.

    What defines modern day?

For example the Foo Fighters have been around nearly 20 years so can only assume that by modern day you mean still making records & touring.

Therefore you can include bands like AC/DC, Rush & Iron Maiden.

If I recall rightly the AC/DC tour from last year was the highest grossing of all time (or it was at the time of the tour), which would suggest that they still have the popularity & they win hands down on longevity.

That said, I do like the Foo Fighters

OP stated ones that make good music. That disqualifies Nickelback.

The biggest rock band still making new music is Metallica, imo. Foo Fighters is a great band too.

If you're looking for other good modern rock bands, check out Hurt, and 10 Years. Neither are big name bands, but each has enough of a following to have 3 or 4 albums, and they're both good bands. Hurt's volumes 1 and 2 are some of my favorite music ever.

    Chevelle is another good band.

My guess for more recent(5 yearsesque) as in not 30 year old bands like you guys are listing is Kings of Leon. I AM NOT A FAN OF THEM! I agree with Danny who was or is on the ticket, he nails it when he says they started out being really good, then just sunk down to crap for dollars status real quick.

Just because I don't like them, doesn't mean a ton of people think it is good music, but some people have little exposure.

I am also discounting Muse,Paramore, and Coldplay as too old.

BTW What is the deal with Fun. The name of the band is Fun. this is their name.

All I hear about now is how great Fun. is.

Thrice is awesome. Amazing how they have transitioned from what they were about 8 years ago. They may be taking a break right now though.

The only rock bands to have five consecutive number 1 albums are:

    Dave Matthews Band
    Metallica

I would put them in the argument.

The only other rock band to hit even 4:

    Disturbed

Ive never understood the appeal of Nickleback or even the Foo Fighters{yes the band with a singer with an everpresent smile}.
I remember when rock used to be on the edge and pushed boundarys.
They are nothing more then cookie cutter rock by numbers thats been done a million times over only by better artist and deemed safe for the publics enjoyment.
I imagine listening to either is a lot like munching on a cardboard box.

    Steel Panther rocks tho....:laugh1:

    Modern?

No one. The giant bands all seem to be gone and the few remaining have been at it too long to be called modern.

I agree big bands are gone, it is way too compartmentalized now.
