Should Cowboys Trade Draft Picks With The Patriots?

The Patriots, thanks to some shrewd maneuvering, have three picks in the top 33 in the 2011 draft. Overall, they have accumulated nine draft picks so far, six of which are in the first three rounds. The Patriots may not have enough roster spots to accommodate so many picks, so there has been rampant speculation about what, if anything, the Patriots will do with all those draft picks.

Yesterday, Patriots evil overlord head coach Bill Belichick talked with NFL Network's Mike Lombardi about the team's picks, and what the Patriots might do with them. Belichick said the Patriots have already received interest in their three draft picks:

I would absolutely trade down if the targeted players the Cowboys have in mind are gone. Stupid not to IMO.

Can anyone tell me the value of the #9 selection if a deal was made with New England.

NE was the team I pointed out in my mock as the one we could trade down with, it makes alot of sense. However, they are a team that strikes me as too stingy to give up much. I don't see more then a 1st and 4th coming from them.

Here are a couple of different trade scenarios mentioned in the article.

    Cowboys 9th and 140th (1386 pts) = Patriots 17th, 60th and 92nd (1382 pts)

    Cowboys 9th and 71st (1585 pts) = Patriots 17th, 33rd and 124th (1578 pts)

    Cowboys 9th & 40th & 140th (1886 pts) = Patriots 17th, 28th and 60th (1910 pts)

I like option #1 because we pick up an extra 2 and 3.

If we got option 2 I would probably use #33 to trade down a skosh and get the 3 back. Or use #40 that way.

33 is a nice pick because it's the 1st pick in the 2nd round and any player that has slipped from the 1st rd or any player that has 1st round skills but a bit of a red flag in their past is there for you. If you want to take that guy, you take him without the risk of 1st round money and contract years. It is also an easy pick to trade because there are teams who covet certain players and want them for the very same reasons outlined in the 2nd as opposed to the first round. It's an easy pick to trade and get value on.

Option two would be phenominal if we could pull it off. I just don't think the Patsies have anything pressing enough to move to 9.

We would still have a shot at elite talent with each pick. I could very well see that going:

17: Carmimi (or if my dreams come true Cameron Heyward)
    33: Brandon Harris
40: Taylor or best OL talent available.

Everything after these picks would be cake. This would solidify all pressing needs.

option 2 is the best imo, 33 is a good pick to have if it is not your original pick plus that is 3 picks within 23 spots of each other

NE absolutely has to have a big time WR. I could easily see them coming up to #9 if AJ Green is still there.

At number 9 position, the cowboys value points are 1,350,
the patriots picks in 1st round are
    17th 975 points
    28th 755 points

as you see that too many points to get patriots to give us both their number one picks

2nd round 33rd is 690 points, still to high
    2nd round 60th pick 400 points

so if you take the 17th pick and 2nd rounder at 60th pick 400 points you come up with 1375, equal in points, you might get the patriots to throw in an extra 6th or 7th to sweeten the deal

you can look up on the internet Draft Trade Value Chart, so you can keep up with it come draft time

    love Cowboys 9th and 140th (1386 pts) = Patriots 17th, 60th and 92nd (1382 pts)

Brandon Harris at 17, and then i'd have to look for the extra 2nd and 3rd round picks. But that trade doesn't seem a patriot like trade.

Did you see the numbers Tom Brady put up this season? This couldn't be further from the truth.

If Patrick Peterson doesn't drop to pick #5 thru #8 or Robert Quinn or Von Miller doesn't fall to pick #9, I'm sure the Cowboys might think seriously about trading down in the first round to pick up another 3rd round pick. If so, I'd hope the Boys draft PHYSICAL guys in this years draft to match Jason Garrett's stated new Cowboys mission statement. With Rob Ryan aboard, maybe Jerrah and scouting department will have the same vision!!! That being said, they are plenty of talented tough college football players (that play with a nasty streak) available in this year's draft. Let's all hope we get lucky and draft/sign via free agency the following player:

1st Rd: Patrick Peterson CB or Robert Quinn (OLB)
2nd Rd: Derrick Sherrod or Gabe Carimi OT/OG
3rd Rd: Kenrick Ellis or Phil Taylor NT (mammoth at 6'4" 340lbs)
4th Rd: Tim Barnes (Wisconsin tough guy) or Jake Kirkpatrick C
5th Rd: Robert Sands (6'4" 221lbs) or Deunta Williams FS
6th Rd: John Clay or Henry Hynoski FB
    7th Rd: Da'Rel Scott RB (4.34 40yd/5'11" 205lbs) or Allen Bradford RB

If Patrick and Quinn go before 6, Jerry has to be on the phones and moving back. There is no other player worth 9. Prince should be picked around 13-17.

Give me Prince, Carimi and Wis in the first 2 rounds please.

I don't know about this. I think it depends on who the Cowboys have on their boards. However, I do agree in principle. If their player is not there, then trading back is a very viable option.

The Pats need a pass rushing OLB very badly. They need a WR that can stretch the defense. They need help on the OL, they need a CB. The CB, IMO, is the player they might move up for. I think that the CBs would be gone at 9. If they are not, then the Cowboys might not want to trade and decide to take the CB they want if he's there. The OL is later in the 1st so you don't trade up for that. WR is also later in the draft unless it's Green they covet and I seriously doubt he's there at 9. If he is, then that could be the trade.

    great word :D

this pick holds alot of value as mentioned by other posters. teams will defitnatly overpay for it which is why i dont think the pats would deal it to us to move up. This is the pick they will use to recoup whatever they might give to trade up or to trade for someone number 1 next year

Obviously it takes another team to REALLY value a certain player and move up and make it work.

I'm hoping a Von Miller tumbles, or Gabbert takes a nose dive. Hopefully Cam Jordan can sky rocket after the combine and we can make a deal with the Pats or something.

I'd love to have the Raiders pick(Pats) and the Pats 33rd overall.
