Carmichael did not do so well this season without Payton on the sidelines. What everyone forgets is that Payton comes from the Gruden tree. Fassell hired Payton away from the Eagles when Gruden was the OC under Ray Rhodes. Payton's offense is heavily influenced by Gruden's West Coast philosophy with the exception that he just does not spread the field horizontally but vertically with the oversized WR/TE and speedy RB who lines up all over the field. Many in league are starting to emulate features of the Gulf Coast offense.

Payton has mentioned that his mentors were Gruden and later Parcells.
