like demarcus ware?
He's actually been at or near the top of the teams' boards as a potentially elite pass-rusher for some time. The draftniks and talking heads are just now catching up as they talk to more and more front office personnel and scouts. He won't get past the Jets at #16, if he makes it that far.
Of course he is, 25 players are going in the top 15 this year.
That being the case, and if Mark Barron is gone — saw that you like MB at 14 in your final mock draft — would you take Chandler over any/ all other options remaining at 14 if he's there? If he's Ware-like, how could we NOT?
I know he's a name that's flown up the publicly advertised mock drafts (Mike Mayock's, for example) this week. TBH, I knew nothing about this kid before he began getting so much press. Intrigues me now.
I'd prefer to swap picks with NYJ and grab Mercilus and an extra pick if it's between Chandler and Mercilus.
NYJ really wants him.
I've spent more time looking Whitney Mercilus over. For me, this works ... again, not knowing a whole lot about Chandler Jones.
I don't like Chandler that much better than the other OLB pass-rush prospects, especially for playing the side of the field where Spencer currently plays. Whoever that guy is has to be able to set the edge and play the run, as well as rush the passer, and Jones is primarily a pass-rusher. I'd be much more interested in him if we didn't have Ware.
As for would I take him over all other options, I'd have to know the options. I'd take Ingram over him, for example, at #14. If he was gone as well, I'd likely be looking to trade back a few picks and then take BPA.
I'm going to have to call BS on some of this Jones hype. First of all, when JSOnline polled NFL scouts a few weeks ago he was ranked nowhere near that high. So, no, I don't believe NFL front offices have "always" had this guy ranked as a potential Top 10-15 pick. Either someone is pumping out misinformation, or people are drinking the Kool Aid on this kid by the gallon.
Second of all, I just heard Mayock say on NFLN that in 3 years he's going to be the best defensive player in this draft. Yet, after the Combine Mayock didn't even have Jones ranked even among the Top 5 at his position. How do you grade a guy from not even among the Top 5 at his position to the best player in the entire draft class in 6 weeks when absolutely nothing of note has happened in that time? Mayock prides himself on is own independent film study, so what could you have possibly missed on tape the first time that is apparently so blindingly obvious today?
These guys are like 15 year old girls. If the draft were two more weeks away we would have Lombardi and Mayock telling us he's better than Ware and Jared Allen combined times ten.
That tells me a lot, Wulf. I like Ingram, but Bryan Broaddus claims he likes what he sees in Upshaw over Ingram. I don't know enough to know. (???) Beyond my pay grade. I'm expecting both to be available at 14, from all I've read and reasoned out in my own 'mental mock' which, GRANTED, is of much less value than your mock and/or others' mocks from those in the know.
The talk of trading with SD at 18, other than if Barron — or DeCastro, for me — is still there at 14 has me thinking that could be a good way to go.
I think Jones' injury had something to do with his rise kind of like Barron, but Inman is correct NOBODY was talking about him.
I think this guy has coaches more excited than scouts which is usually trouble, but who knows. I'm surprised Perry is thought of so poorly.
It's all about the pass rush. For starters, the NYG have won 2 SBs in recent years, and the biggest reason why - at least co-biggest reason, along with clutch play from Manning - is that they can flood the LOS with more elite pass rushers than a normal OL can handle.
Contrasted with the NYG and their 3 great pass rushers, we have one. We have a huge need for pass rushers, and there will be some available at 14. I prefer Ingram over Chandler, but I'd like to have either of them.
I like Ingram better as well. Just saying that the role for the OLB opposite Ware is a little different, and a pass-rush specialist isn't really geared for that role. Doesn't mean he can't do it...just not his cup of tea.
Others also have agreed with Mayock that he COULD be the best defensive player. I guess if we moved back we could take a look.
this is exactly the case, and really is the case with every single player that gets reported as either "rising" or "falling". these players were pretty much graded out to these spots by the teams the whole time. the media is just changing where they think the players will go based on new information they receive.
2 days straight I have read that Pats covet him. This is fine because it bumps more guys on our radar down
