Bryant aiming in the right direction

OXNARD, Calif. – Cowboys receiver Antonio Bryant said today that he never feared losing his job following last month's altercation with coach Bill Parcells.

Bryant, who threw a sweaty jersey in Parcells' face during an on-field activities session in early June, said he had "bad aim" and never intended the jersey to end up on his coach's head.

Bryant said too much had been made of the incident.

"It's not like I came in with Uzis and shot up the whole camp," Bryant said. "It was just a lack of understanding. I didn't know what was required of me."

Bryant said having a better understanding of his role on the team still didn't make him feel better about not starting. He said Parcells talked to him "like a man" last week and encouraged him to have more respect for his teammates and coaches.

Parcells has already grown tired of fielding questions about Bryant. He joked that reporters were going to hold an "Antonio vigil."

Regarding Bryant's talent, Parcells said, "I like his skill. He can run, he's quick and elusive."

    CAMPFIRES

Coach Bill Parcells, who has maintained that quarterbacks Quincy Carter and Vinny Testaverde are in a dead heat, changed his tune today.

"[Carter] has a leg up on everybody because he's the one who played the best last year," said Parcells, who quickly added that he was still willing to change any position. Parcells said Carter has added about four pounds of muscle and now weighs 219 pounds. He played at 215 last season.

Parcells said the main thing Carter has to do is limit his interceptions. Last year he threw 21 interceptions and 17 touchdowns. ... Parcells praised the off-season work of backup defensive end Kenyon Coleman. He said that Coleman's teammates have nicknamed him "The Strong Dog." ... Receivers coach Todd Haley wasn't cutting his players any slack on Day 1 of camp. Haley, who sounds like a seasoned heckler, tossed a couple of expletives out when receiver Randal Williams didn't cut sharply enough during a drill. When Zuriel Smith made a nice catch, Haley hollered, "You should've done that on the last pass." ... Parcells chewed out offensive tackle Kurt Vollers for not going hard enough on an inside running drill. ... Running back Eddie George struggled a bit in his first practice. Running backs coach Maurice Carthon had to remind him to carry the ball higher so he wouldn't fumble. George also ran the wrong route during a passing drill. Parcells indicated that George's presence might allow him to look at rookie running back Julius Jones as a kick return man.

    TALENT SHOW

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones was even more energetic than usual during Saturday's first practice. After one running play, Jones jogged toward guard Tango McCauley while shouting, "Way to go, Tango." ... Safety Keith Davis showed nice recovery speed to break up a deep pass from Quincy Carter. ... Defensive end Marcellus Wiley disrupted several plays and defensive end Eric Ogbogu would've had a sack if quarterback Quincy Carter hadn't been off limits. ... Quarterback Tony Romo tucked the ball and ran during team drills, causing Parcells to shout, "That's the way, Tony."

    FREE TIME

The Cowboys didn't exactly run the most fan-friendly practice today. Fans stood eight deep along the fence of one of the practice fields, but Parcells had his team working out at least 75 yards away. And players along the sideline obstructed the fans' view. Parcells called it a "pretty noisy" crowd. ... Oxnard is a farming community and that was evident with the smell of manure each time the wind blew. ... Temperatures in the low 60s made up for the smell, though ... Former Oklahoma coach Chuck Fairbanks is attending camp again this summer. Fairbanks was around for a couple of weeks in San Antonio last summer.

Well, you've got some gloating to do, but reading quotes like this:

doesn't convince me JJ and Bill won't live to rue the day they dealt so mercifully with "Mr. Bad Aim". (yeah right)
