    IRVING – Now that the Cowboys have shown what they can do when they put their mind to it, the first two games are even harder to explain.

    Or stomach.

    Maybe the 0-2 start was required to humble these Cowboys. Maybe, as cornerback Mike Jenkins suggested, they "play a hell of a lot better when our backs are against the wall."

    Psychological flaws aside, the Houston game captured the Cowboys' full attention, and the team responded with an emotional victory. The mood at Valley Ranch resembles the one the Cowboys carried into last season's bye week.

    The test is whether it will have the same impact.

    A 26-20 overtime victory at Kansas City was the spark that ignited a division title run. It was the afternoon the team came together and got a taste of what it could become.

    Sunday's game was a bit different. The win over the Texans reclaimed what the Cowboys had lost in the first two weeks of the season. It reminded everyone why this team is a contender in the NFC.
