Should Cowboys try to keep Brian Waters?

    FEB 18

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.comIRVING, Texas -- Brian Waters, who is set to hit free agency after a seven-game run at right guard for the Dallas Cowboys in 2013, turns 37 years old Tuesday.

    WatersWill he play in 2014?

If he wants to, then he will. That is the question Waters has not answered and likely will not answer until well into the offseason.

He has yet to have surgery on a torn triceps that knocked him out for the season, but even if he does have the operation he said in December that would not mean he will play in 2014. He talked the day after the season about needing the surgery just for quality of life.

Waters started five games for the Cowboys and played in seven at right guard. Jason Garrett talked about Waters’ presence changing the offensive line. He brought a toughness and diligence to the group.

At this stage in his career, Waters does not want to go through the rigors of an offseason program and training camp. He and the Cowboys went back and forth last summer and the Cowboys were ready to move on toBrandon Moore until he opted not to get on a plane to Oxnard, Calif.

I would lean towards saying no but if he agrees to 1 year ahead of time not waiting until the end of camp then sure bring him back but Dallas I think needs to know well before camp begins.

    No..

We need so many pieces that he won't make any difference.

Only if he still has the drive to play and is willing to play with a 1 year contract. Emphasis on the first part.

I'd agree with the 1-year contract idea, since it may buy time to fortify the defense and ensure backup strength on the inside of our OL as well. Of course in consideration of our cap situation, he'd have to come at a reasonable price. If that criteria can be met, perhaps bringing him in for another year would help.

I can't imagine how anyone can say no to this...the guys helped to make the OL MUCH better once he got on the field, and his tutelage is probably the most important part...the young guys already learned a lot from him, another year would be even better...has to be reasonably priced, of course

No, No,No. This is why we're a .500 team. The list of FA we've signed over the last 15 years is long and distinguished, and has helped us to many post season battles.o_O

    37 freaking years old.....

For a low-price 1-year deal, yes, but don't expect to get 16 games out of him. If he can help younger linemen to learn the ropes, then that's a plus too.

I'd go thumbs down on this.

If he isn't going to go thru the conditioning and work to last the season..

    forget about it.

We need players with drive and commitment.

Waters is long past his prime.

Waters was the best interior lineman we had last season while he was playing. Better than Fredrick by a good bit and worlds better than Bernie and Leary. Obviously you get all your 'information' from ESPN. Explains a lot

Id say no. Dallas is going to get what it needs to compete for at least two more seasons.

I would like to see Free's numbers with and without Waters because I thought it almost looked like two different players through out the season.

    No.

The team needs a young guard who has some potential and is cheap.

Not an old guy who can't be counted on to play a full season and is expensive.

I like Waters and would much rather have him on the roster than Costa.

figure it out through camp….hopefully we supplement talent in that position, and don't have to….but…….

He probably doesn't want to come to camp anywho.
