IRVING -- At times last season, the Dallas Cowboys' defense was so dominant that it deserved a nickname. The Cowboys ranked second in the league in fewest points allowed at 15.6 a game and in the last two games of the 2009 regular season, the defense shut out Washington and Philadelphia.

Despite returning 10 of 11 starters this season, however, the Cowboys have been nothing less than awful. They have limited opponents to fewer than their 15.6 average last year only twice -- in a 13-7 loss to Washington and a 27-13 victory over Houston.

They have allowed opponents to score more than 20 points twice, more than 30 points twice and more than 40 once. It has reached the point that whenever the defense takes the field, Cowboys fans feel like it's a doomed day.

This is what I don't understand. Can one player (Alan Ball) be that bad?

10 out of our 11 starters did return. But:

    1) Jenkins play has regressed,
    2) Newman playing hurt,
    3) Brookinghas lost a step & will be gone after this year
    4) Sensa.. keeps making mistakes
    5) Scandarik is playing worse then last year
    6) Ratliff isn't playing as well (for a variety of reasons)
    7) We've suffered injuries along DL
    8) Ware isn't the game changer he was last year
    9) Spencer hasn't stepped up his game midseason like he did late 2009
    (10) We've got little defensive quality backups
    (11) Opponents know how to scheme our defense since we made no changes in the offseason
    (12) And then there is Ball, a CB trying to play safety
    (13) And Wade was our HC/DC

    Did I leave anything out?

Demarcus Ware has 8 sacks through 8 games or almost his entire season total last year. Anthony Spencer if nothing else it may be said isn't playing worse than last year (probably better) and if I recall correctly Wade is the guy who had us in back to back shutouts last year.

Something else happened and I wish I knew what it was.

Its not all about sacks. Teams arn't scared of Ware at all this year. He's not getting much pressure on the QB even one on one, and Spencer isn't getting any at all.
