SAN DIEGO — Rookie safety Barry Church could see the end zone. He was close enough to smell it. But he never made it.

Church was stopped by San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers at the 8-yard line. The quarterback?! “As soon as I picked it up, I was dead tired,” Church said. “The monkey jumped on my back.”
Church, an undrafted free agent from Toledo, got more playing time than expected. Starting strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh injured his left shoulder on the first play of San Diego’s second series while trying to make a diving tackle on running back Ryan Mathews.

“I think we’re going to have to see some more,” Cowboys defensive backs coach Dave Campo said of his young safeties. “Hopefully we’ll see them again next week get quite a bit of playing time. That’s a good thing. If we have to make some tough decisions, I’ll be happy with that.”
