Gwatney not shot at Obama's headquarters. Nothing to do w/ him.

This likely is not a ideological crime of passion, but more likely some disgruntled guy who bought a lemon at one of the Gwatney dealerships. Or some other feud, but it won't be political in nature I'd wager.

Wow I really REALLY misread that.

Saw the title and thought it was just gunfire, completely missed someone being shot.

Until the details come out there is no way to know if it is political in nature or not.

If some wacko like that astronaut lady did it over a crime of passion...I doubt it would become political.

One person was shot Wednesday at the Little Rock headquarters of the Arkansas Democratic Party, police said.

CNN affiliates report that Arkansas Democratic Party Chairman Bill Gwatney was shot.

The shooter, described as a white male, came into the headquarters before noon and asked for Arkansas Democratic Party Chairman Bill Gwatney before firing three shots, CNN affiliate KATV reported.

Little Rock police would not confirm or deny whether Gwatney was shot.

CNN affiliate KTHV reported that a witness working in a nearby shop said Gwatney's assistant ran into the shop and asked her to call 911 because the chairman had been shot.

Little Rock police Lt. Terry Hastings said that the victim was in critical condition at a hospital.

A vehicle description was provided to police, Hastings said, and officers chased the suspect into Grant County, about 20 miles south of Little Rock. Hastings said the suspect was shot and taken into custody, he said.

The high-speed chase involved Little Rock police, the Arkansas State Police and the sheriff's office, he said.

Hastings did not release the suspect's name or what condition he was in, saying the investigation was ongoing. Hastings said the motive for the shooting was unclear.

KATV reported that a blue Dodge pickup believed to be the suspect's had been wrecked and smashed against a tree.

Arkansas State Democratic Party Chair Bill Gwatney was shot and critically wounded at State Democratic Party Headquarters on Capitol Avenue about 11:50 a.m. today, witnesses at the scene said. Police were not releasing the vicitm's identity, but it was supplied by several people on the scene.

A suspected shooter was shot and taken into custody after a chase into adjoining Grant County. His condition wasn't known.

There was no official report on Gwatney's condition, but he was taken from the scene in an ambulance and a witness said the wound was serious. Police (shown at crime scene briefing shortly after the shooting) said later that he'd been shot three times in the upper body and was in critical condition. Reports from family members said his condition was grave.

A police update is scheduled around mid-afternoon.

The shooter had entered the office and asked to see the party chairman. He was led to an office reportedly pushed by a worker who tried to detain him and the shots were heard shortly after. The man ran out and drove off.

At a briefing less than an hour after the shooting, police said the shooter left in a blue pickup. The truck was discovered close by. The man apparently changed to another car, which police were able to identify. There was some initial confusion about whether the shooter changed vehicles, but those reports seem now likely to have been the product of early chaos. A chase of a blue pickup ensued and it ended in Sheridan, where police say the suspect was shot and taken into custody. His condition is unknown. The police had no indication of motive. Several Democratic employees were in the office at the time and were being questioned about what they'd seen.

The chase ended near the Winston Clinic on the northern edge of Sheridan in a developed portion of town. There were conflicting reports about whether police fired shots during the chase or after the pickup left the highway and stopped in an open field. Authorities were still swarming that scene in Sheridan Monday afternoon. A police spokesman said the wounded man was airlifted from the scene.

Gwatney's secretary made the 911 call from a florist shop next door. She was heard to tell the police dispatch: "Help, our chairman's been shot."

The shooter was described in the phone call as a white man in his 40s, with whitish hair and wearing khaki pants.

Police may have picked up the shooter's trail because he threatened someone with a gun nearby. Reports were that a man with a gun confronted a building manager in the Arkansas Baptist State Convention office building a few blocks east of Democratic headquarters and said he'd lost his job. He pointed the gun, but didn't shoot. He fled in a vehicle whose description was reported to police.

Gwatney, a former state senator, was an executive in a car dealership group, a business in which employment changes are not uncommon. Rumors immediately arose that the shooter might have been a disgruntled former employee of a Gwatney Chevrolet dealership. There were layoffs at a Gwatney dealership this week, according to employees.

Gov. Mike Beebe was en route by plane to Northwest Arkansas when the shooting occurred. He got word and returned to Little Rock. He was with the Gwatney family at UAMS.

Under the Dome, Rep. Steve Harrelson's blog, reported that the Capitol was in "lockdown" after the shooting.

KATV reported that Republican Party workers at their headquarters on Sixth Street, just two blocks away, were sent home early out of what an official said was "an abundance of caution." Police gave no indication that the shooting was the work of anyone other than the man stopped in Sheridan.
