WASHINGTON — Before the United States was born, there was a Marine Corps. For the last 236 years Marines have fought tirelessly to preserve the freedom of the United States and the traditions of the Corps.

This year, the Marine Corps commemorates 236 years of service as well as the sacrifice and dedication of countless Marines that those years represent.

Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James F. Amos cut the Marine Corps birthday cake in a ceremony at the Pentagon in Washington Nov. 8.

The cutting of the Marine Corps birthday cake is a long-standing tradition in the Corps and celebrates the spirit of the Corps that has been at the foundation since its inception.

“It’s this spirit that resides in us that has been with Marines for 236 years and it has resided in young men and women throughout the years all the way from the many wars that we have fought side by side with one another, to today in Afghanistan,” Amos said.

    Dirty Jarheads.

That was for my father in law.

We tease each other about the Army and Marines stuff.

It's funny how people who serve or who have served will rip on each of the other branches of the military in a fun manner but if ever a group of members from different branches were together and an outsider made fun of them...then it is on.:laugh1:

It truly is like a big family. You can make fun and joke around with your brother or sister but if you are not part of the family you better not.:)

Little history on the term Leatherneck

"Leatherneck" - This nickname goes back to the leather stock or neckpiece, which was part of the Marine Corps uniform from 1775 to 1875. The leather collar was designed to protect the jugular vein from saber slashes. It also insured that Marines kept their heads erect and maintained military bearing. Although no longer used, it is commemorated by the standing collar on the dress blue and dress white uniform.

I also like the white dress ones the navy uses.

But man alive the standard army green dress uniforms (not bdus)...I always thought they were kind of ugly.

Ooo Rah !!! Happy Birthday USMC.

We are doing a huge celebration of this today in our office. Our commissioner is an Ex marine of 30 years.

They are doing a cake cutting w/ some USMC sword that is like 150 years old.

Why would you cut a cake w/ such an antique?

    People are strange.

    Anyways....Oooo Rah and carry on

History Lesson of the term Devil Dogs (I love History) :laugh2:

"Devil Dogs" - In the Belleau Wood fighting in 1918, the Germans received a thorough indoctrination into the fighting ability of Marines. Fighting through supposedly impenetrable woods and capturing supposedly untakeable terrain, the men of the 4th Marine Brigade struck terror in the hearts of the Germans, who referred to Marines as the "Teufelhunden", meaning "fierce fighting dogs of legendary origin" or as popularly translated, "Devil Dogs."

And while we are at it, though I acknowledge, this is the Marines' day, lets don't forget the many Navy Corpsman who have served and do serve, right along side all those Marines.

The Germans had a lot of nicknames for our forces starting in WWI. Apparently we whipped their butts all over western Europe toward the end of the war, contrary to the belief of WWI being "the meat grinder". Part of this was our change in strategy and moving away from trench warfare, and the advent of the tank.

369th Infantry Regiment (15th NY National Guard), an all-Black Army Infantry Regiment was known as the "Black Rattlers" after rattlesnakes, or the "Harlem Hellfighters." Germans are known to have turn and run at the sight of their DUI (distinctive unit insignia).

You've got 4th Marines - the Devil Dogs. --> 4th Marine Brigade in WWI

And the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division (actually WWII) known as the "Devils in Baggy Pants" for the terror they caused the Nazis.

But sorry to derail this and make it about my Army folks - Back to the Marine birthday celebration! ;)
