How many QB's can one team have?

    By MATT MOSLEY / DallasNews.com

When Cowboys coach Bill Parcells says he's going on vacation, he means it. He's done everything but board the windows at Valley Ranch since last month's minicamp.

But we know that with a little more than two weeks until training camp, fans are hungry for Cowboys news. And that's why we'll be addressing a different topic every day until the first practice July 30.

How many quarterbacks can one team have?

With just over two weeks to go until training camp, it might seem odd that the Cowboys still have five quarterbacks on the roster. Head coach Bill Parcells has already said he wouldn't take more than four quarterbacks to camp, so someone has to go.

That someone will be Chad Hutchinson, who didn't exactly light it up in NFL Europe. The Cowboys haven't done anything with Hutchinson yet because they're hoping to trade him. The most – and this is a stretch – the Cowboys could get would be a conditional seventh-round pick. But that would be better than nothing.

Once Hutchinson is gone, Tony Romo will be the guy playing for his future. If Parcells sees enough value in Romo, he may consider keeping four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster for the first time in his career.

If that happens, Romo will actually have a legitimate shot at beating out Drew Henson as the third quarterback. Yes, everyone was talking about Henson challenging for the starting job a few months ago. But there's no way Parcells will put him in that position.

The presence of Vinny Testaverde may challenge Quincy Carter. But another benefit is that Testaverde will take any undue pressure of Henson's development.

And if you're wondering why the Cowboys would spend so much time worrying about who their third-string quarterback is, take a look at Baltimore's Anthony Wright.

He started last season in the No. 3 spot, but he helped quarterback the team into the playoffs.

Chad will not be released - unless injury settlement.

    He will be traded.

Got any idea about trade destinations, Nors?

    I mean seriously.

Not Hutch to NE for David Patten stuff. ;)

Have no trade destinations but fact he's still here leads to ponder fact he is on the block at least.

Want to bet Patten is moved? :)

    Dallas deals Bryant and Hutchinson
10:27 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 14, 2004

    By MATT MOSLEY / DallasNews.com

Sixteen days before the start of Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California, team owner Jerry Jones has announced the trade of third year wide receiver Antonio Bryant and third year quarterback Chad Hutchinson for New England Patriots corner back Ty Law and wide receiver David Patten.

The four player move provides Dallas with a ten year veteran starting cornerback who has 96 career interceptions. Known for his tight man to man coverage, the 31 year old, 5'11, 200 lb Law was embroiled in a contract dispute in New England which became so vociferous that at one point, the disgruntled defensive back referred to Patriots head coach Bill Belichick as a "liar". Law expressed relief that the deal was struck, and reiterated his desire to play once again for the coach who drafted him in 1995 with the 23rd pick of the first round, Dallas second year head coach Bill Parcells.

Dallas also eliminated a potentially negative situation by removing receiver Antonio Bryant, whose recent mini-camp blow up included separate arguments with wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, receivers coach Todd Haley, and Parcells, Speculation was that Bryant, who caught 39 passes in 16 games last year, would be punished with a fine or suspension. As weeks passed since Bryant was escorted from the Cowboys facilities by security guards, the feeling that Bryant would be traded had diminished. Therefore, his trade today comes as something of a surprise.

Patten, a nine year veteran, had just 9 receptions in 2003 for 140 yards, and 15.6 average. But his speed, route running, and experience make him a valuable addition to the Dallas receiving corp, and he is expected to easily unseat recent signee Dedric Ward for the third receiver on the Cowboys depth chart.

In 2003, Hutchinson never regained the momentum he appeared to have in 2002, when he started the final nine games of the regular season for the Cowboys. He was sent to NFL Europe this offseason, but did not impress the Dallas coaching staff enough to merit another year here.

Club owner Jones spoke briefly to the press at 10:30 central time, to announce a press conference tomorrow at 10 AM CST in which Law and Patten will be officially introduced.

"This trade should come as no great surprise", said Jones. "It has long been our intention to bring to the Dallas Cowboys every New England Patriots player that Nors wants. We only regret that with the signing of Ty and David, we have not yet guaranteed Nors his hybrid. But rest assured, we are working on it".

    18. How many QB's can one team have?

I've seen four but the general rule is three with one on the PS if a fourth. But four can be done. The league is basically always QB starved. Starting QBs are a premium. Everyone is looking for a "franchise" QB or the next one. QBs are proven draft pick and trade bait as well.

The longer the Boys carry Hutch the better the odds are he can be sent to a team in need or see something for a pick, player or player to be named later. You can't trade him for anything if you cut him. A Yogi Berraism but the obvious sometimes gets overlooked.

The downside is he can look worse if you show him, he can get injured more than now (whatever that extent is), he takes a roster spot although I'm still not sure about the roster exemptions surrounding him, and if you practice him he eats up time and snaps the others could use.

Getting Vinny clearly states they don't see him as a number two and probably not as a future player on this team at three although you can't discount it now for several reasons.

    19. Who's next at safety?

I assume you mean who makes the roster at safety this year. The W&W brothers, Dixon, and Davis but Dixon is on the bubble and Davis is not a sure thing either. People make fun of Scott but he is in the hunt as far as I'm concerned until he's cut or whatever. He can hit and doesn't make a lot of big mistakes although he doesn't make a lot of plays either at safety. Don't discount his ST value. There are some others out there with outside changes and I only know there is more competition. I haven't dissected it further.

    20. Could the Cowboys finally have a viable pass rush?

Sure. Wiley is the key that everyone is focused on. If he can remain healthy and provide pressure and some sacks then he will be an upgrade to EE and the entire DL should prosper a great deal. Here is a place for 1+1 to be 3 or 4. I would place very good to outstanding odds on him being better here. I don't know about his run defense and would appreciate input here.

There are others out there who could end up playing some or a lot depending on his health and production and what they do if and when they get a chance. We have one maybe two DT/DEs in the hunt and there are always injuries, failures and surprises. Don't forget people get added and subtracted a lot so the backup DEs or even starters could be elsewhere for all we know. I don't even want to think of injuries to Ellis or Glover.

I would love to hear from the camp group when it rolls around about everything but especially the OL and DL. Hint, hint Dale.

HA! That was some teasing for Nors, Jobberone.

Only in Nors world could you get Patten and Law for AB and Hutch.

But if you were buying it to the last paragraph, maybe Nors is actually ONTO SOMETHING.

LaTuna Im making an assumption here but I think you are the old HH. And I must say you have become quite adversarial and pedantic as of late.

What is up with your Jets?

Regardless I could easily see a team trading a conditional late round pick for Hutch rather than wait on waivers. He does have some tools and I have yet to see him behind even a decent Oline......

Ah Muse, you're a funny one...

You didn't also happen to find any articles about how QC actually DID leave the Cowboys to become a bus driver, did ya?

    Hey Fuzzy, where ya been?

Adversarial, yeah. But once camp goes in, I quickly switch to pure rah-rah cheerleader mode.

Pedantic, I'll work on that - it's an occupational hazard.

My Jets 'unloaded' some dinosaurs and have a new DC. Also brought in a decent second receiver (the Titans McCairens) to pair with Moss. We shall see.

I hope we can get something for Hutch, and perhaps this waiting is to ensure his shoulder is healed so he can pass an exit physical and one for another team. I also hope if he gets moved it's to a team that puts full effort into developing him, a good situation for him..

To those who were misled by my post to Nors, who I hoped would see this last night as he was online when I wrote it:

Sorry. I don't like those "Williamns Busted for Pot" type thread headlines that you open and find it was Ricky, and I certainly woulnd't have spoofed Nors in a separate thread with it's own title. (which is where any news of a real trade would have gone). I also thought the idea of AB for Law was as believable as Jim Thorpe for Red Grange in 2004. AB isn't worth one of Ty's shoelaces. But apparently, despite his prformance last year and his outburst, folks still think he has considerable value. I feel he has BARELY more than Hutch.

    My apologies.

Juke, wipe that smirk off your face.

Oh please, don't apologize. It gave me a well needed laugh before I went to bed. I like to be P.T. Barnumed every now and then.

B.T.W. McCairens is more than just decent. Don't be surprised if he and Moss flip flop between #1 and #2 WR over the next year or so.

Saladin, I think he's more than decent too, and the Jets need that size, but things have a way of turning out badly in NY and I don't want to get overly optimistic.

We're a team that still hasn't replaced Keyshawn, and lost a primo receiver in Lav Coles. A team whose GM maintained publically after the Coles defection, that "receivers are replacable parts", then went on to replace Lav with the immortal Curtis Conway.

The fish rots at the head. :D

    well orchestrated

I might have bought it if Pats had not signed Kittner and Miller today at QB. That nixes the Chad trade thoughts and I never felt Pats would go to camp with only 3 deep at QB. bellicheck agreed.

    Still on Patton watch......

I didn't hear about Kittner and Miller. JIM Miller? Is he still hanging around?

Well I guess one of them ends up behind Davey.

    You know what Nors?

Something is up. Not kidding either - I won't be surprised if some block buster is announced next week, well, maybe a minor block buster. All this buzz about AB, he's back in Dallas, but not working out at the Dallas facilities, he can't work with Todd Haley......NE won't be interested in him tho, anymore than they'd be in Hutch.
Right now I'm starting to feel the only way AB stays is if JJ and Bill can't trade him..they won't just release him. Sort of like it was with Allen.

Who do you think would want both Hutch and AB? Or either of them? Who has a minor need at wide out because AB can't be counted on to fill a major one, and a coach with the patience and job security to even chance dealing with him? Who has room for another project at QB, albeit one who has started 9 NFL games?

As for the Pats, they DO have a full house at receiver.

    We COULD use Patten.

    Hopefully, he gets released.

and just where are the pics of you in a cheerleader outfit we all want to see...

on another note... regarding "the trade" with the patsies... just how does this help our transition into the full-time 3-4 for Nors sake... huh?
