Jones sweating uncertain status of Cowboys' cornerbacks
Lingering injuries to likely starters concern Jones.
    By Tom Orsborn

MIAMI — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is on edge after the team's projected starters at cornerback, Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins, sat out the preseason with injuries.

“It is a concern. It is a big concern,” the owner said after the preseason finale Thursday night. “It bothers me.”

It should. The Cowboys yielded a franchise-record 436 points last season, and the performance of the defense in the preseason failed to inspire confidence that the unit is on the upswing.

Newman has been sidelined with a groin injury since early in training camp at San Antonio. Jenkins has been practicing, but the stinger he suffered at the Alamodome has limited him to non-contact work.

The status for both players for the season opener Sept. 11 at the New York Jets remains uncertain, although Jones said he's hopeful both will play...

Jerruh seemed to be blaming them for not playing; but I would say it is much more likely that considering the shape of that field, the staff did not want to take any chances.

burma, your point on concern with the field is a good direction of conversation.

A fan should reasonably feel, after all the attention brought on damage to unprotected players as well as hits to the head and quarterback, that due concern should be extended to a general guideline of field material and for player's protections as well, require uniformity and no space allowed for shifting and unstable dirt directly to be upon the playing field. Whether in a sporting venue for both baseball or not. That could stimulate an upgrade that would encompass both sports as well, and easily corrected when alternating games utilize that same surface.

That field was horrible and the NFL should be ashamed of allowing that to happen.

I've never agreed with some of the 'hard stances' that some GM's and Coaches put on injured players to play meaningless preseason games. Yes, it is a good opportunity to 'evaluate' them and they need additional seasoning under Rob Ryan's defense (who's yet to implement his entire defensive packages). But, I see NO problem with Terrence Newman (especially) getting one more week to get his groin injury completely healed. Mike Jenkins' neck stinger might be a different story. Let them both focus on the Week One game against the Jets and whatever Rob comes up with. They'll be fine.
