Very interesting wording... As noted already, if Werder is reporting this, there has to bee some truth to Benson's reaction and if he is reacting that way there has to be some legs under the possibility of Payton entertaining offers. Think about it. If he was going to just resign with New Orleans, wouldn't he have already done so? What's holding him up? Hmmmmm....

Step 1. NFL voids a contract of a Coach under suspension without pay because of language within that contract.

Step 2. Media notices that this opens up the possibility of a change of venue for the Coach. Further speculating that since he maintains a home in Dallas and they want Jerry to once again be the George Steinbrenner of football so they can write all about how he meddles and prevents coaches from achieving success they immediately begin to float scenarios of said Coach being the savior.

Step 3. Disgruntled Cowboys fans and numb Saints fans also notices this and the buzz truly gets going.

Step 4. The media now emboldened by the turbulent waters of the speculation ask an aging Saints owner what he will do if this happens.

Step 5. Aging Saints owner, who feels his Head Coach owes him another year at least since this one was basically voided by the suspension feels not only the sting of the media scrutiny in his town, but now the speculation and he lashes back upon a common threat, to sue.

    Step 6.
Fans react to the threat believing it means he is actually scared instead of angry.

Step 7. Suspended Head Coach, who never had any intentions of leaving, signs his renegotiated deal and looks for redemption to his image and for his team in 2013.

    Step 8.
Disgruntled Dallas fans finally realize there was very little hope of this pipe dream and continue to stew and rue.

Looks like we're right on schedule.

If Payton just signed a contract for $7 million, and the league nixed it over a simple clause, why not just take the clause out and sign it again? What is the hold up?

    Something is up.

Payton probably had second thoughts when he heard Benson was going to re-name the basketball team the New Orleans Pelicans.

You're Sean Payton. Your contract is voided and you are suspended. Your team loses their first 4 games and is a long shot to recover.

Would you use this as leverage to get the best possible deal you could? Especially once the media starts speculating your exiting to the biggest spotlight in the NFL?

Of course you would. We all would. He is.

    Spot on.

And I wonder who first leaked to the media that his contract was voided. Hmm.

Then if that is as deep as the "relationship" is with New Orleans, that only makes me think he is more up for a bidding war for his services.

He was crucial in getting Romo here. He's coached here. He knows Jerry well. And coaching the Cowboys is vastly more high-tone than in that sewer of a rotted city.

Plus, perhaps a former Eastern Illinois quarterback would like to coach a former Eastern Illinois quarterback.

wow. nobody has even reported that Benson has said he will do this, only that a source said Benson would, yet everyone just believes Benson has said it.

The league voided his contract allowing him to jump ship. He would sue because he had him under contract, but the league broke the contract allowing him to leave.

Tampering with what? Payton isn't under contract. You can't tamper if he isn't under contract.

Benson knows his ability to splurge pales in comparison to the splurge king.
