That's the best of his "early" not so freaky period

The 5 Easy Pieces box set is pretty cool for an overview of much the early stuff

It just flows beautifully. Angels of Ashes and Rhymes of Goodbye are hypnotic; The Old Man's Back Again has a great groove; The Seventh Seal is over the top and all the better for it. Best $25 I've spent recently.

Even though it's not as freaky as Drift, there's definite darkness in the lyrics. A small sample:

    The Angels of Ashes
    will give back your passions
    Again and again

    Their light shafts
    will reach through the darkness
    and touch you my friend

They'll fly in a mind dance
    and blind you with wings
    wrapped in flame

If you're down to an echo
    they just might remember
    your name

    In the unbroken darkness
    where emptiness empties
