Orlando Scandrick believes the job of leading the Cowboys’ secondary has fallen to him, and he’s ready for it.

He said Wednesday at Valley Ranch that he will take it on himself to bring the rest of the defensive backs along.

“It’s my job to continue to believe, and I look at myself as a leader,” he said. “If you look at our group, with losing Will Allen, me and Brandon Carr are the veterans of the group. If you look, out of me and Brandon, I’m the veteran of the group. I’ve been here the longest.”

The Cowboys released veteran safety Will Allen on Tuesday, committing themselves to fourth-year player Barry Church and rookies J.J. Wilcox and Jeff Heath at safety. At cornerback, they have Scandrick, Carr, second-year first-round pick Morris Claiborne and rookie B.W. Webb.

“I think it’s my job to help those guys and bring them along and continue to help them believe, and we’ve just got to continue to have faith,” Scandrick said. “We’ve come too far to turn our backs on our coaches now. I just don’t think that’s the right thing to do. I don’t see that happening with the group of guys we have.”

Scandrick said he’s confident not only that the defense will turn it around, but that the team will win.

“I was more disappointed that we didn’t pull that game out,” he said. “As far as the yards, I mean, at the time, when the game was in crunch time, I wasn’t thinking about the yards. I was just thinking about trying to win. Obviously, we have to play better on defense and get better on defense to give this football team opportunities to win games.”
