Is it me, or does it just seem like whatever magic they once had is long gone?
Mike suddenly can't scheme a defense or recruit and Bob is riding a long "big-game" losing streak for the most part.
Have to wonder what's going to happen next year as we have no idea if Bell can throw a pass or not...and frankly if the next starter isn't significantly better than Landry Jones, OU is headed for serious mediocrity.
Maybe Chuck Long and Hypel are problems too but looks to me like Landry got worse and worse over the season...
Its saying something to say that I think I'd take Gundy over Stoops if we had a big game upcoming and I had to pick a coach.

Seems to be the only semi-big game he can consistently win.
Really sensing next year's Red River game will be a lot more competitive. I think UT is in a lot better shape going into next year than OU.
Frankly, I have a hard time seeing OU even being the best team in the state of OK for the next few years if OSU keeps their staff intact. Really don't think they were this year either.
OK State may have 3 QBs better than whomever starts at OU next year.

I think the big 12 is on the cusp of a transformational shift where the traditional powerhouses play second fiddle to new emerging ones.

I've probably worn people out with it, but yes, I've said for years that Bob is very overrated. He's still getting credit for that NC he won 13 years ago with Blake's players, I guess, because to me OU underachieves greatly. They're good, but they should be much better. I mean, they're one of the truly iconic programs in college football.

And then there's the way he bullies the local media if they question him at all. He's so defensive and thin skinned... Loves to try to intimidate the local press and then talk about how many times he's won 10 games. Well whoopdy do.

I barely keep up with college recruiting, but for the most part I don't think Stoops recruits Texas as well as he should, especially with Texas down lately. I guess no one is ever going to be as good as Switzer was, but still, even Blake got good players.

Plus, I personally detest that offense where everyone stands up and looks at the sideline for 20 seconds. I know that's somewhat dependent on the players they have -- they didn't do that when Peterson was there -- but still, I hate that finesse crap.

I know nothing about the inside workings of the money there, but I wonder if the big OU boosters are starting to wonder about him.

It is kinda hard to get rid of a guy who wins the conference every other year. If you move on from Stoops do you have a replacement who will continue to win 10 games? The Aggies thought they made the right move in firing R.C. Slocum. He wasn't as good as Stoops but he was a winning coach and A&M took a decade to find his replacement. Stoops won't be fired until he starts losing four and five games every season. Heck, Mack Brown has had 3 straight seasons of 4+ losses and he isn't going anywhere.

Both OU and Texas share an almost annual problem with their respective coaching staffs. IE, they lose coaches at a very high rate which makes it hard to create stability.

IMO, the real problem for OU these past few years is that they have not had a starting QB who is a master of the staple of Stoop's offense. He is not a great no-huddle QB IMO. That offense keys on 1st down success and I just have not seen the same kind of results with that offense under Landry. I think that this is a big part of why OU has had issues with regards to winning big games.

I would not get too overly excited or concerned with OU's situation. Once Landry leaves, there is a very good chance that Stoops will bring in a QB who can run the No-Huddle and we will be back to what we have traditionally seen out of Stoops teams. Of course, you can argue that this works well up until you get to the Championship game and see a Pro Quality defense and there is some truth to that IMO. However, I would not be quick to throw dirt on the collective faces of OU just yet. Same can be said to Texas IMO but we will see what happens.

I don't recall a bigger program that chokes more in bowl games than OU.

I mean they do well in the regular season and frankly losing a game or two in the big 12 is still pretty darn good. But seems like when they get to the bowl game it is choke city.

Don't know what the problem is as I don't watch all that much OU football and am new to the Big 12. But take that as previous outsider's view and from a team that made them choke in a big bowl game a few years ago.

Now maybe they have just been unlucky enough to play teams in bowl games that were flat out better than them even if others did not think there were.

But at the very least they are still doing well during the regular season and still winning or darn close to winning the conference each year. A Level Texas has not been at the last few years.

I see Stoops and Mack differently. I think Mack gets better players overall but still has problems during the season as of late. I think they could find someone to do a better job with the talent they are able to get. Now OU gets good talent as well but just a little less than Texas but I don't know if you would get someone to replace Stoops at OU and get the same or better amount of success as you would replacing Mack at Texas.

Of course I guess if you hit on the right one it could be done....Texas A&M (at this time) seems to have hit on the right one.

The reason, IMO, OU losses in big games most of the time is because they are matched up with SEC teams. Spread does not match up well with Pro Style Defenses. I think that this is changing in the Big 12 but OU still runs an uptempo style offense so this may continue to be the case for OU but we will see.

Texas is a different issue and OU's recent success over Texas can be directly linked to each schools success at QB. While Landry is not a great no huddle QB IMO, he is still a quality QB and is much better then what Texas has seen these past several seasons. This, IMO, has been the difference.

Well, I don't keep up with Texas as much, but I'm shocked he's still there, too. Look at what happened with your program with a new coach. Sure, Manziel might deserve most of the credit, but I give Sumlin a lot, too.

    A&M disagrees... :)

Actually, I think they agree. A&M plays an SEC/Pro Style defense and well, we all know what happened between TAM and OU.

They lost to Boise and WVU in the fiesta bowls...neither in the SEC.

I don't think you can narrow it down to them just playing the SEC.

I never said it was just SEC. I said most of the time which means most of the time and that's true but the point I'm trying to make is that OU's offense is very good against most teams but it has problems, like most open offensive schemes against good defensive units.

    For example:

The year the lost to WV, they were top five in total defense in the country. Top 10 in Scoring Defense. They were pretty dang good.

The year they lost to Boise, they weren't as good but they too were pretty good. They were top 20 defensively but they were the 2nd ranked offense in the country behind Hawaii. You can make a case that Boise was the exception and it would probably be true but that year, Boise was just that much better.

The year they got the heck beat out of them by USC, the Trojans had a top 10 Offense but they also had the 2nd ranked Defense in the Country.
