Do you draft for upside potential or do you draft the highest floor player in the 1st rd?

Burden vs Egbuka
Mkyel Williams or Stewart vs James Pierce
Nolen vs Harmon

I would always lean to the floor in the first round.

Ideally, a first rounder is supposed to be a walk-in starter or at least compete for a starting position early. I'm looking for traits typically on Day 3 for guys that have a high ceiling.

3 things when drafting in top half of rd 1:

1. Player should play a Premium position (QB, LT, elite DL, elite WR)

2. Player should pass the “norms test” for that position ie no Mike Green at DE, no Tavon Austin at WR etc. If something has never been done in the NFL, im not betting a top 15 pick that this guy will be the first to do it. Let someone else take that risk.

3. Should have a high floor and walk in starter

Cowboys need floor players. Draft choices for the Cowboys are expected to not only get reps but start. Since we use the draft as the only way to improve the roster we need to start going the safe route. No more Maze, Schoonmaker, Guyton, and Kneeland’s in the first two rounds.

In a vacuum, I think you would want higher floor in the first vs a boom bust player.
Draft that guy who is a starter, just depends if he's good or elite.
Rather than that guy who has all pro athletics and/or traits but it's not certain he ties it all together to be in the NFL in 4 years.

Day 3 is the ideal time to take that flier on a player that has those traits but either played against lesser competition or may of gotten by on athletics than technique. See if you can "coach them up"

We may not agree but NFL teams also draft for traits.

Some of our fans are going to be shocked at how high Mykell and Stewart go.

Yes teams will draft upside, but if that player fails to reach it, it could potentially set a franchise back. I want a plug and play impact starter especially for this team that doesn’t use fa for team building

Yeah it’s for sure both. You can’t take a safe pick at 12 that doesn’t have pro-bowl, if not all-pro, potential. Solid starter is reserved for after pick 20 (at least)

So who's your best #12 based on who will probably be gone and who will probably be available?

If I'm picking #12, I should have the luxury of both.
100% agree.

I think we’ll have a good chance of cashing in on that…but if you tell me Mykell Williams is BPA at 12, which is right around his current consensus rankings, I’m on board

Dude has earned that ranking as a 19/20 year old in the SEC in a scheme that did him no favors. I think his best football is ahead of him.

#12
Bo Nix
Jahmyr Gibbs
Jameson Williams
Micah Parsons
Henry Ruggs III
Rashard Gary
Vita Vea
Deshaun Watson

The successful guys had good upside, but they certainly were both. History says go DL at #12 for the Cowboys or RB.

Drafting in the top 15 you are looking for a guy to make an immediate impact. I would not be looking for a great athlete with limited experience or production. I want a guy who beat the best competition he faced in college. And even then, I need to know he can do the same in the NFL. guesswork should be left for day 3.

if the pick at 12 is a de...i like shemar stewart,texas a&m.

if its a dt...hope its walter nolen, ole miss.

if ot...josh simmons,ohio st....i am intrigued by missouri's armand membou...especially after nfl.com ranking.
