U.S. presses new Israeli govt to back two-state solution

    http://in.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idINIndia-39429720090505

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Joe Biden pressed Israel on Tuesday to support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a speech to the leading U.S. pro-Israel lobby.

Israel's new right-leaning government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has so far shied away from publicly supporting Palestinian statehood, an omission that has dismayed U.S., Arab and European officials.

Biden, speaking to a conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), said Palestinians must halt militant violence and Israel "has to work for a two-state solution ... not build more settlements, dismantle existing outposts and allow Palestinians freedom of movement."

Biden's comments came ahead of a meeting between Israeli President Shimon Peres and President Barack Obama later on Tuesday and less than two weeks before Netanyahu visits the White House.

In a speech to the AIPAC on Monday, Netanyahu said he was ready to begin Israeli-Palestinian peace talks immediately but he made no reference to a Palestinian state.

Obama has made clear his own commitment to the two-state solution, which has been the basis for U.S. policy in the Middle East conflict for years, and has nudged Netanyahu to accept the goal of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

The US has been pushing a 2 state solution for a long time now. I think for Israel to give up territory they must feel secure from attacks and the only way I can see that happening is for Hamas and other Islamic groups to stop attacking and calling for the complete destruction of Israel

The six day war is really coming back to haunt the Islamic nut jobs. They bit off more than they could handle and need to learn to deal with the consequences.

True but other nations like Egypt and Jordan were able to make peace with Israel and they now have the land back that Israel took after the war. My own feeling is Israel has done what any other nation would do when coming under constant attack. The only way out in my view is for the terrorist groups to be denounced by Muslim world and then maybe there will be peace in that area. I don't foresee this happening anytime soon

Israel will never say it is secure and the others will never disavow terrorism.

The key isn't what the talking heads say, it's what the people want. The average Israeli wants it over, it's only the right wing and religious zealots there that want the conflict to continue. For the Arab side, you will never satisfy Hamas and they will not disavow terrorism as they will never swallow themselves whole. However, if you satisfy the people who end up strapping bombs to themselves so that the supply of suicide bombers dries up, they will cease to be a relevant force.

The US can ensure Israel does what it should by no longer giving it a blank cheque. It will then also have to say to the nations that harbour terrorists, no money for you either.

The nut job Muslims have a great deal of influence in how this turns out. They will either continue being nut jobs and be killed or they will drag their pathetic little society out of the dark ages and live. I believe Israel's patience is growing thin. They have been very restrained in their responses when dealing with these lunatics.

    Restrained?

I see you're still getting all your "news" from the same MSM you conservatives claim to so detest.

Last December's pounding of Gaza is pretty typical of Iraeli restraint. But it probably never even registered on your radar.

So its Iseael's fault that Hamas is getting people to strap bombs on their chest and blow up civilians? Typeical liberal belief that people are not responsible for their own actions. Frankly if we cut off our support for Israel, they the fireworks are really going to fly. They will feel that they have no choice but to make a couple countries cease to exist.

I think some people forget that the holocost happend and that Jews will not let it happen again. I mean you have Hamas not ceasing attacks after they agree to a cease fire and you have Iran saying Israel should be wiped off the face fo the earth. Reguardless of if they give the land back, the threat is still going to be there. At least right now they have a buffer. If you don't want to loose your land, don't go to war and get your *** kicked in the process.

Their only mistake was stopping before they killed all the Muslim nut jobs. Israel should not have stopped. They keep signing these cease fire agreements that the Muslims nuts continue to violate. Why should Israel show any patience or tolerance for these dirt bags that are blowing up women and children. The sooner Israel wipes out the threat of the Muslim nuts, the better off the world will be.

Now don't confuse Muslim nuts jobs with regular every day Muslims. The fanatics are the one that need to go away. The sooner the better.

How do you know? How much research have you actually done to come to such a conclusion that the Muslims nuts are the ones who continue to violate this or that?

How do you know there aren't just as many Israeli nuts on the other side and both of them feed off of each other?

Israel is a conundrum to me - rather, a contradiction of sorts. You have misogynistic and anti-homosexual "old schoolers" who want strict adherence to Talmudic law, juxtaposed with "modern Westernized Jewish" homosexuals, a rampant porn and industry that feeds the carnal desires of some of its people as well as parts of the Arab world, sun-tanning bikini clad women who span its beaches, moderate, respectable Jewish people who adhere to the good faith principles that span all religions, and atheistic Zionists who care little for the "old law". Somehow it is considered a credible democracy while being a Jewish state at the same time. However, it is very disputable that it can be classified as a "Jewish" state except in name only for the reasons stated above and the sense that its people primarily consider themselves "Jews" as a "race" which isn't even scientifically credible. I'm a little puzzled to how some Jews can consider a state to be "Jewish" if they contradict their own theology of "no return until the Messiah".

Yea, I've never been but quite a few of my friends have (they're Jewish, I'm not) and they describe a very diverse culture similar to what you say. That whole region is definitely one of the most messed up (yet very, very interesting) places in the world.

Because FOX news tells me so!;)

Seriously, I learn new things about topics I thought I had a good understanding of every day. Some of your posts in particular have been enlightening. But I will stand by my belief that you can not launch rockets into cities targeting civilians and you can not use suicide bombers to achieve your goals. I would have less issue if the Muslim fanatics were attacking Israeli army bases instead of targeting civilians. I understand there are claims by both sides of indiscriminate killing of civilians, but strapping bombs to children is over the top. JMO.

you know a person has no argument when they bring up the Holocaust.

Funny though how some mention muslim nut jobs but make no reference to the jewish religious zealots who want to live in the occupied territories or how Israel continues to build settlements in the occupied territories in which the zealots can live.

So if folks in the next town over from where you live were raining down rockets and sending ******** children with bombs strapped to them to kill your family, you would just sit back and take it?

Silly question. Of course you would because that is what you expect other countries to do.

So now Canadian wants no one to talk about the Holocaust. Not surprising.

nice dodge, you never commented on Israeli religious zealots, neither side over there is all right nor is either side all wrong. I tend to sympathize with the muslims more than the jews but that is beside the point.

What makes you lean to the Muslim side? Is it how they treat their women? Or are you just a fan of blowing up children? Israel has made concession after concession in both land and money. When the Muslims stated goal is the elimination of Israel how much compromise can there be?

Again, I will ask you. The next town over has targeted you and your family for destruction because of your religion. They rain down rockets and send children with bombs strapped to them to try to kill you. And you would just sit there and let it happen? I would hope you would have a little more backbone than that.

What in the heck is wrong with people of different religions living on the same block? How was Jordan and Egypt able to make peace with Israel, yet the pinheads down the street can't figure it out.

Who are these religious zealots you are referring to? Are they strapping bombs to kids and sending them to market to kill innocent people? If you have that story somewhere please post it.

I tend agree. It is hard to make concession when 1 side stated goal is the complete destruction of Israel. This is not spin from me or exaggerated comments these are the exact words from top leaders in Hamas. As you point out and I have as well Israel been able to make peace and lasting peace with Jordan and Egypt so it is not the fact Israel does not want peace it is the fact that Muslim radicals have called for the compete destruction of Israel. Heck in 2005 Israel gave up the Gaza strip to the Palestinians and Hamas has used the Gaza Strip to constantly attack Israel from.
