prior to the season. most fans on this board predicted the cowboys to be 7-9 to a 9-7 team. well, guess what? we are about that at 5-6. is everyone upset because we don't look pretty? did most predict 7-9 and want to see us play like a 12-4 team? a 7-9 team plays ugly, wins ugly, loses ugly. and that's what we are.

we all have said since prior to the draft, we have OL issues. we draft none. sign mid to low level ones in FA, and Lo' and behold, our OL is awful, which is directly impacting our play. and yet everyone complains!!! we are not as talented as we think we are or most fans think we are. we lack in critical areas and even some of the skilled players aren't as good as we think they are, and they don't become super players just because of the star next to their names.

so what do you expect? a 12-4 type team, playing itself to a 7-9 record? and what are we getting on the field? competitive, we have been in almost every game to the end, and lose at the end, because we just aren't that good.

Folks are upset because the fan in all of us doesn't like to see their team lose– ever.

And even though many of us did predict a 7-9 to 9-7... missing the playoffs is a kick to the gut.

Our team is not going to participate and it hurts.

But looking back on the team and the season (so far) I think many can say, "This team simply isn't good enough– yet." People hate the word "process" and no matter if Garrett stay or goes, Jerry hires a "football guy" or whatever else happens, there simply isn't enough talent across the board to be considered a solid playoff team– yet.

Let's see what the offseason brings. :)

I really didn't expect much this season, but I'm frankly shocked at how bad the on the field product is.

Although I thought the Cowboys would finish in the 7-8 win territory this year, I always figured that they were building towards a run in 2013. Now, with the amount of holes this team has...I don't see it. We've got to blow the whole thing up and restart.

Like you said...the team just isn't very good.

If getting rid of 4 starters on your OL in 2 seasons doesn't mean "rebuilding" than consider yourself sucked by Jerry Jones. Even 3 guys from last season was a big red flag.

You don't see that in the NFL at all these days and I can't think of one team that has done that.

I think that's probably a bit too extreme... "blowing it up".

    linebacking
    corners
    Bryant
    Romo
    Tyron Smith
    some of the defensive linemen
    Witten

There are some decent building blocks there.

If this team shores up the offensive line and improves the pass rush I can see good things happening.

    That's true.

And two guys will probably be "churned' out of the offensive line after this season.

We have a handful of decent building blocks, but we're miles away from contention.

We basically need 6-7 new OL including three new starters. That in and of itself is a two year (minimum) job, and that doesn't even address any other holes on the roster. By the time this line is competely overhauled, Romo is going to be 35. I can't see the Cowboys winning a championship with a 35 year old Romo.

If Austin is released this offseason (as he should be), we'll need another starter opposite Bryant, plus another good RB to back up Murray (since Murray is injury prone)

Plus a starting safety. Plus a replacement for Spencer if he walks. Plus replacements for Ratliff, Spears, and Coleman. etc, etc.

Once you start doing the math, it becomes fairly apparent that the window for this group has essentially closed.

Deal Romo for multiple assets, cut some dead weight. Aim to compete in 2014. Kickstart the rebuild and make Lee, Carter, Claiborne, Bryant, and Ty Smith the focal points.

If we double down with this group, I fear we're headed right towards a re-do of the Campo years.

I have doubt that Free gets released based on his contract.

He looks like he just on an island and doesn't trust himself or the guy next to him.

It might be wise to have a strong veteran presence next to him but also having a backup plan or two should be on the list too.

6 or 7 new offensive linemen?

Sorry guy I had to stop reading there.

I think after the season concludes and you have time to reflect, I don't think you'll be quite as "over the edge".

Keep in mind, there are no "loaded" teams out there. All of the playoff contenders are flawed-- several with big ones.

I wouldn't write off the Cowboy's chances in 2013 so readily.

We keep getting told that adding in coaching such as Calahan, Robinson will in itself turn around the OLine, the WR crew.............and I dont blame them in entirity as they have done it in the past.....they as coaches have skins on the wall.

There is something between those assistant coaches and the players brought in that is a brick between what should be smoother running cogs in the "process".

I think that is what gets folks fired up, there is something there behind the scenes that just cannot be pinpointed.

I can't recall any NFL teams that went into rebuilding mode with a franchise qb.

I agree, all resouces should be put into rebuilding the oline and get someone else that can get after the qb.

I'm really on the sign Payton bandwagon but if we address these 2 issues we'll have a better on field product. Now the culture a Valley Ranch, well that's another issue.

To the OP. It's one thing to not be a 12 - 4 team. But why are we ONE of TWO teams that to this day does not have 10 points by halftime in a game. Why do we fall down 23 - 0 to the Giants at home. Why do we get down 28 - 3 to at home to a team that is TRULY rebuilding. They have ONE.....ONE player on offense...that could start on this team. Yet with a rookie QB...a rookie 6th round pick RB...they come into our house...on Thanksgiving...and jump on us 28 - 3. We get taken to OT....in our house...to a team with a Rookie QB...a Rookie RB...and a worse record than ours.

So it's one thing to KNOW you are not a 12 - 4 team. But it's the fact that we are BARELY a 7-9 team. That is what is scary!

    - Parnell and Cook can possibly be backup plans to Free, with a mid round pick on OL.

    - The RG position seems to be the unknown. I'm not convinced Bernadeau is the answer but a strong FA veteran might help Free. Maybe a top draft pick but then you Free working beside a rookie again.

    - You have Costa, Kowalski, and Bernadeau as possible centers. Centers are important to the run game and the plan should be very well thought out here. The dominant running teams in the league have superb center play.

    - Livings is a guy that you can win with.

Realistically one spot if you keep the 3 at center, 2 if you don't for the OL.

If Austin is gone, than Beasley would be your slot guy. A mid-tier vet FA would suffice on the outside - has to be big and fast.

S - Probably draft, Barry Church will have a job next season. The question will be if Sensabaugh will.

If Spencer walks than you'd have to address this in the draft. You will spend way too much $$ in FA for a top tier OLB. I hope he gets resigned.

Ratliff can be a pass rush specialist, and you have Brent who has stepped up nicely in his place as 2 down player.

Spears and Coleman can walk and you can find better in the draft.

It does seem overwhelming but we have the resources to do it. If you want to deal Romo than you are essentially waving the white flag.

Without a franchise QB you have nothing.

all team have injuries, including the redskins. yes, the Cowboys do not quit, but they have become used to losing and self destructing to the extent that it not longer affects them the way that it would for many other teams.
