Ok..

I have not said much about Jones as it appears he will be offered alot more than we can do.

But, what are we losing and why is he getting so much attention.

Let me go first..then you guys.

#1-Is Jones really that good?
I am not so sure. It appears to me watching him play..he is not that solid in Zone and his guy often runs wide open.

#2-If #1 above seems true, then is Jones pretty much a 'man on man' guy which limits his role as you can not expect him to be effective like that only. The offense will figure that out and decoy Jones out of the play to open up other WRs.

#3-If he does not grab interceptions, is it reasonable to assume he is playing off the receiver too far a majority of the time? Most intercepts will occur when a CB plays the receiver tightly to be close to where the ball is coming. Jones is not what you call a ballhawk.

#4- is it just me or is it our defense? It seems they throw less at Jones and more at Awuzie and to the TE to attack the safeties. They are easier to confuse and it results in bigger plays. Just ask Aaron Rodgers and Wentz.

#5-So given any of this, Jones had his best 2 seasons under Richard. He is gone as is Marrinelli. If he was not leaving anyway, I think he would have a backslide season for us in 2020 anyway.

#6-Since Marinnelli called the front 7 and Richard the defensive backfield calls..and neither of those guys liked to blitz..Jones NEVER blitz from CB. Crazy. Jaylon Smith is a very good LBer blitzer as is Wolf Hunter. Never really called them either.

So with Jones leaving and Wolf Hunter hurt, Lee in limbo and the rest of the LBers not starters..what now? Drafting a cover CB with 4.2 speed to blitz?

#7-Lets look on the bright side. With Jones leaving, do we not get a compensatory pick in 2021 for his loss? If so, what will that be?
You apologists must know.

So I have mixed feelings about him leaving and no mixed feelings about keeping any money he would otherwise get.

I thought his first years with us were a waste as he bounced from position to position never stabilizing the safety positions and we are still looking for that help Byron Jones was supposed to fill.

So what do you guys think about FA and Jones?

Don't say "if he will take a home discount keep him" stuff.

Other thoughts.

That depends on what his new contract is. I hate it when folks complain about a contract before they even know what it actually is. I won't be a part of that. With that said, I'm not for giving him the upper end of what is being estimated he could get.

Only knock on Byron was lack of interceptions and playing in the wrong position under rod.

Some corners are trap doors that make you regret opening them. While Bryon is the door that is locked shut and let's no one in.

Not sure what the contract numbers are yet so I cant comment on that yet

Byron doesn't get many int's but he doesn't allow many completions either playing man on the weak side. He makes qb's forget about that side of the field. He can also shut down good TE's. He is worth 13-15.

Sure glad you got tired of attacking Dak and now switching to Jones. Cooper next or did I miss your thread on him?

Except for the 3 TDs he gave up in 2019.

He will probably be worth it the first couple years but being dominant at cornerback is hard for multiple years (there are plenty of examples out there.) I could see a down year in there or so because of that trend but the salary may go up abit so its a wash. He’s worth it IMO

* HE CAN CATCH, JUST NOT IN THIS SCHEME/ COACHES TECHNIQUE*

No free agent is ever worth their contract.

You pay "elite" prices for players that just might be "good".

Whoa. Now I sound like Stephen Jones.

Help!

I think Byron can still improve on playing the ball, heck towards the end of the season he started getting his head around looking for the ball. Plus, all other aspects of his game really good. Only 2 years of full time CB means there may still be upside also.

Some GMs have to take a chance on a guy like BJ cause they've been strolling out hot garage at CB getting roasted by #1 WRs...Byron refuses to get abused, and that's why he's coveted.

Is he worth being a top paid DB? Not even close.

Is he worth good money because he can be your best DB on your team? Yes

He does shut down parts of the field and is athletic. He's just not a "standout." What do you do with that. I think the Cowboys throw out a "Top 10" offer and say they tried.

The predicament seems to be can’t pay Cooper, Dak, and Jones so one has to go.

Dak has to be signed. Like Dak or not, letting him walk means you are rebuilding so signing either Cooper or Jones becomes dumb in that scenario.

If you believe Dak needs or greatly benefits from Cooper then Cooper has to be signed leaving Jones the odd man out.

I tend to say sign Dak and Jones and let Cooper walk. I think I’d rather take a chance of replacing Cooper over replacing Jones.

You make some good points but also consider we are going to tag Dak which will allow us to sign Cooper and Jones.

Here we go with how much players "should/shouldn't" get paid.

The Cowboys can resign all of their fa's if they want. If they let him walk, they have determined that he isn't worth his market price tag. Same as Hitchens a few years ago. In my opinion, Bryon Jones isn't a top 5 CB in this league, but he is about to be paid the highest at the position.

Nope, but I'll bet he gets a better contract than Clowney, which is ridiculous.

Whoever signs this guy is going to regret it.

Not that he is awful, but answering your question, it doesnt at all pay to spend big cap dollars on corners. Even the best of the best struggle with today's rules.
