The Cowboys lost five key players in a little more than 24 hours, after the so-called tampering period began.

Cornerback Byron Jones agreed to the largest deal for a cornerback in NFL history, agreeing to an $82.5 million contract. Defensive end Robert Quinn also got an enormous deal, with the Chicago Bears agreeing to terms with him on a $70 million contract. Defensive tackle Maliek Collins and tight end Jason Witten, who each started all 16 games for the Cowboys last season, both left for the Las Vegas Raiders. Receiver Randall Cobb, who had 828 yards last season, got a deal from the Houston Texans worth $9 million per season.

None of those players have the star power of Prescott or Cooper. No one player in that group was going to make or break the 2020 Cowboys. But added all together? That’s a lot to lose, and free agency hasn’t even officially started yet.

Note that the bolded print doesn't just apply to Cowboys players that might go to another team, but also to other team's players that might go to the Cowboys. We don't yet know how it will come out in the end.

I’m not touching those prices those players got...

byron Jones highest paid CB ever? PASS!

Quinn on the wrong side of 30 who is a one trick pony who can’t run block or read a screen... injury prone ish. 14 mill?? PASS!

Cobb at 9 mill to be a slot guy? PASS!

I get it we’re die hard fans that post on a fan forum... but let’s not over hype our own players

Depends how it plays out.

It'll be pretty easy to upgrade over Cobb, and Witten was no longer good. McCoy and Collins are pretty much a wash, short-term. The question is how much of a gap is there from Quinn to whichever DE replaces him, and how will they compensate for the loss of Byron.

I don't think the defense will necessarily be worse, and the offense could still get a lot better.

More from the article (for those who can't be bothered to click the link)....

"Cowboys owner Jerry Jones likes big deals. Prescott, Cooper, defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, tackle Tyron Smith, guard Zack Martin, center Travis Frederick and running back Ezekiel Elliott all have cap numbers over $10 million this year. Defensive tackle Tyron Crawford isn’t far behind at $9.1 million. Dallas has held onto some of its biggest stars. That won’t help the depth of the roster.

"There are still a lot of good players available in free agency, and while the cap is not a myth as some claim, teams are shrewd when it comes to restructuring contracts to create space. Maybe the Cowboys are going to get creative and add some significant talent.

"As free agency got going with the tampering period, the Cowboys accomplished their biggest goal, which was to retain Cooper and Prescott. But that came at a hefty price beyond the money Jones had to lay out."

(Personally, I think they make some good points.)

LOL but giving Cooper $60 million guaranteed is just fine? Jones at $17 million is far more worth it due to how tough it is to find a quality CB.

This.

Quality free agents are almost always bad value relative to the rest of the team. I congratulate all the guys who left on the their big bucks and look forward to our comp picks.

Thanx for posting. I was shocked to see Quinn's numbers.

Wow.

I guess our offer of some Cracker Jack's and a secret decoder ring didn't cut it.

Stephen, throw that all in with some marbles and we should get whomever we want. Throw in your Whistle Top and Duncan Yoyo if needed.

I can chip in my old slingshot, too. Only killed a lizard with it. All yours.

Glitter done.

The only talent we lost is Byron Jones, and he got a massive deal. The rest can kick rocks (especially Robert Quinn - dude sucks).

Gregory is coming back. Gregory > Quinn. BJones isn't a difference maker. No big loss.

Losing Quinn hurt a bit but adding McCoy made me feel better. I couldn’t care less about Heath and Jones at his price. Looking forward to the draft and see how they fill holes before I can either cry or be happy.

Just remember..

How many times have we been totally disappointed with this team and drafting.

Trystan Hill, Taco, Gregory, Quincy Carter, Vander Esch, Jaylon Smith, on and on. Even Tank who for his first 2 years was a bust and caused us to draft Gregory becuz Tank was suspended and injured and looking like a bust.

Ridley was a unanimous choice as we had lost Dez and desparately needed him and they took Wolf Hunter knowing he had a neck issue, etc.

We just can't do any reaching or trying to double down on a risk selection this year.

But you watch.

Bet we have at least 1 or 2 picks like that.

So thinking the draft is going to fix anything is reaching.

Still waiting to see Maliek Collins' contract. Googled it and didn't see any numbers, but if it hasn't been reported yet, it's probably cheap.

Anyway, I have long been the Collins cheerleader on this forum, but he is a guy I would have liked to retain. #8 PFF pass rushing grade among interior DL, #4 in ESPN's pass rush win rate among interior DL. That's a lot of pressure we could have kept on the cheap.

I like McCoy and think we'll be fine at 3T, but I don't think he's a better pass rusher than Collins straight-up, and he is 7 years older and probably 2x as expensive.
