For me, it's TE.

First, because while Jarwin's receiving has been everything anyone could have hoped to see develop back-when (iirc) he was given the largest signing bonus in his class of undrafted free agents. But that, on its own, doesn't qualify a player to be a starting TE. It's admittedly a very anecdotal measure, but the fact that I've never watched a Cowboys game these last two years that he's been getting playing time, and heard him praised for a single block, but otoh, have heard him called out for missing a block... that makes me nervous.

Of course, there's a legit argument that if Jay Novacek could get it done, Jarwin is an inch taller and a few pounds heavier, it's legit to think Jarwin can, too.

Second, I can't say I know much about Bell, but what I've read leads me to think, as well as the fact that both Jacksonville and KC considered him not worth bringing back, he's not a #2 who could threaten to push for #1, but rather a #2 who could threaten to push for #3. Schultz, of course, has moved no needle yet, and his roster spot could be under serious assault once training camp cuts are made.

In sum, my perception is that Jarwin has been occupying his rightful role this last year or two, and still should be doing the same for 2020. He's that extra receiving situational TE you bring in, not the one you want as your primary, every-down TE. Bell is okay, as long as you have someone else on the depth chart who is, at least, his equal. We don't. So, I'm one of those who will be especially interested to see how our undrafted free agents out of Michigan and Portland State perform in preseason, and will be watching in the meantime to see if some new opportunity springs up from cuts off the Bears or Bucs rosters.

Swing Tackle- Cam Erving is garbage
Safety- Who is going to tackle, and who is our 3rd S who will see major playing time?
TE- If Jarwin gets hurt we are screwed, if Jarwin isnt as effective in a larger roll we are screwed
RDE- A whole lots questions with no answers yet
Outside CB- Slot is locked down

A lot of these could easily be answered right now via FA or trade.

If I had to pick one give me safety

Late season, there was talk that they really feel they've found a UDFA gem in Brandon Knight. Then, there's also the potential that Connor Williams could be moved back to OT. My perception has been they mainly added Erving just to have some TC competition there.

Safety- Who is going to tackle, and who is our 3rd S who will see major playing time?

Thompson. Based on what I've heard and read, he was actually getting quite a few of attaboys last year from the previous coaching staff. But it's a viable question.

RDE- A whole lots questions with no answers yet

Again, well-taken, but at least there are plausible answers.

Outside CB- Slot is locked down

Feel a little better here than at RDE, actually, because we're not at the mercy of the league office to determine our fate. The worst-case scenario at RDE is truly concerning.

A lot of these could easily be answered right now via FA or trade.

No doubt.

I'm going with TE also.

Schultz
Hikutini
Bell

That's the depth chart behind Jarwin. I can easily see the Cowboys signing a vet if they feel that group isn't championship caliber.

TE is easier to hide a weakness with pollard and the depth at WR
Swing Tackle has some questions but we signed a vet and in limited playing time I like what I seen from Knight

Great post. In my opinion...

1. LB - Who can have any confidence here when the top 3 are a Hollywood knucklehead, a guy with a bad neck and an aging veteran,

2. Safety - When Woods is a starter, it can’t be good.

3. TE - Jarwin hasn’t shown he can block and he is the starter. Behind him there isn’t much to get excited about.

Erving started 8 games last year and has been signed to be the BACKUP swing tackle. This is a great signing providing depth, but also starting experience, something that Knight and Hyatt lack.

Posters need to understand that there will always be areas of weakness on every team. You can't have a steak on every plate.

1. RDE. Complete question mark. Even if RG and Smith are in camp day 1 how effective can they be?
2. Corner. Added new faces in the draft. Can call them steals. But its also May and its tbd how those new guys play or how Cheeto, Lewis and Briwn play under Harris. Lack of legit pass rush+ ?? At corner could go bad.

3. LB. LVE and Smith. If healthy no worries. But can LVEs neck stay fine and will Smith live up to his deal?

Not too worried about Ol. Still have 3 very good to elite players with 2 spots to fill with at least average guys to slot in. Don't need 5 allpro guys

Great post.

I stole from Derek on Cowboys Break podcast... some good meat to chew on last time. :)

I'll trust that they've mainly addressed their LB problems by addressing their DT problems and that the docs are right about LVE's health, but indeed, it's a lot to ask Sean Lee to get through another season unscathed. That particular spot could use a legitimate alternative before the start of the season.

DE - Smith and Gergory are total unknowns for me. If they get reinstated and can contribute that's great but until they prove that, I feel theres alot of uncertainty there. I feel like someone like Everson Griffen could have been an upgrade and given most of a good feeling about that position with him as a starter but I'm assuming we dont want to pay him.

CB - Specifically, who becomes our number 1? Chido, Lewis, Brown are all coming back which give you depth but I dont see one of them being the guy who I feel can confidently line up against teams number 1 WR and get the job done. Diggs might prove to be that guy in time but I don't see that day 1. Byron wasnt taking the ball away which was difficult to watch over time but more of then not he could cover his guy and not let them take over a game. When we played the Saints with Michael Thomas, for an example, he wouldnt come out and take over the game like I've seen him do to many teams. Byron wasnt the guy giving up back breaking plays either. Chido had given up alot of plays that were frustrating to say the least and that was when he was the number 2 corner. I'm hoping a new staff and scheme can help guys like Chido, Brown, and Lewis but to me, not having a true number 1 corner at the moment when the league is passing more then ever, could be really problematic.

With that all said I'm still really excited to see how the team shapes up as a whole with a new staff.

We know NOTHING about what kind of players Gregory or Aldon Smith will be nor when they'll even be available to show us.

Valid point. Gregory has been out of the game for a long time. Smith has been out of the game for a long, long, long, long time.

But Crawford is a credible starter who every now and then makes a significant play--more typically a tackle for loss than a sack, but a significant play nonetheless. I'm content we can get by with him for some number of games anyhow.

DE spot opposite DLaw.
until Gregory and Smith are reinstated.
I think Anae was a steal and will...by seasons end...have this spot.
but I don't like counting on that swamp-hagg,empy-suited commish...america's self appointed top cop...to do us favors.
I'd like to see a vet added.
