Realistically you hope the guy makes the Week 1 active roster and can give you 10-12 quality snaps/game. Not sure how much more can be expected given his unusual circumstances.

Again, I get it, he hasn't played since 2015. But if watch him play, when he did play, the way he just tossed aside gigantic offensive linemen like they were rag dolls, his speed, his bull rush, it's special. I just don't think you go from 100 to 0 overnight, or even in 5 years. He's still only 31 years old.

I'm going out on a limb and saying Comeback Player of the Year, but if he doesn't even make the team, sorry but that would be an enormous disappointment. With his innate talent, athletic ability, football IQ, he should be starting opposite Tank on the defensive line.

...Whether and to what extent the league aggressively implements suspensions under this provision remains to be seen. Even before the substance-abuse policy was revised, it seemed that the NFL was less willing to throw the book at players who had been suspended and reinstated and more willing to help them remain in the league.

The goal of the revised substance-abuse policy was to get out of the knee-jerk suspension business and to get into the business of helping players who may be suffering from dependency issues. The problem with the revised policy is that, as written, it doesn’t extend the same treatment to players who were on the outside looking in when the policy was revised...

The ball's in his court now. Hope he doesn't fumble.

The 30-year-old has not appeared in an NFL game since 2015 because of legal issues and a public battle with alcoholism.

Smith has had no fewer than four DUI arrests since being drafted by the 49ers in 2011, and was voluntarily placed in a treatment facility in 2013. He was also transferred to an inpatient rehab center following a domestic violence arrest in 2018. Smith was last arrested for DUI in 2019.

At top of his game, Alden had an outstanding blend of agility, power, vast long arms and burst off the edge, more so was known
for his knack for getting into the backfield for collecting sacks on the QB, he knows when how to use those long arms and power
and when to use his agility and ability to bend against extended blocker arms - like gregory he has that innate ability to twist contort and get "skinny" vs OL guys.

And now Smith has bulked up to 285, dunno how true that it's a muscle up 285 lbs..that's a Julius Peppers like size. And one that could see him
in both a 4-3 end... or 3-4 rush OLB.
but i'm in the conservative of not only will it take some time to regain anything close to previous playing form from being away from the
game for so many years. (four years)

...On Wednesday, the league announced that it has indeed reinstated Smith after he had a reported video conference with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, making him eligible to play this upcoming season...

...Still just 30-years of age, Smith has a shot at redemption with the Cowboys this upcoming season. But it’s unclear exactly what to expect from him production-wise as he’s been out of football for such a long time. And as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk warns, Smith is potentially one misstep away from another suspension...

...The signing of a suspended Aldon Smith was a leap of faith by the Dallas Cowboys. A low-risk flier on a once talented player. The news of Smith’s reinstatement is a great first step on a long journey to NFL redemption. But the light at the end of that tunnel could result in America’s Team finding their replacement for Robert Quinn in 2020.

Smith will compete for an opening starting spot at right defensive end, where Robert Quinn tallied 11 1/2 sacks last season before signing a megadeal with the Chicago Bears. The Cowboys are installing a new defense under first-year coordinator Mike Nolan, with plans to maintain a 4-3 base defense while integrating multiple looks with 3-4 principles. That will bode well for Smith, nine-time Pro Bowler DeMarcus Ware told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday.

"DeMarcus Lawrence and Aldon Smith and Randy Gregory can excel in this defense," said Ware, who played in both 4-3 and 3-4 schemes with the Cowboys and Broncos. "There’s five guys rushing now instead of four but they can interchange those guys, and that’s what makes it hard on those offenses because they can’t block you.

"Knowing they’re going to be a little more hybrid style I think is really going to benefit them."
