I'm sure they wanted the roster spot, but having that specific injury clause makes it look like they knew all along that this might happen and that this would be the result. And as I've already posted, he will still revert back to IR assuming no team claims him which is unlikely.

Once an injured player clears waivers they revert back to IR. (unless in rare instances where some other team claims them and rehabs them) Or when it's a minor injury and they reach a settlement.

You're getting this confused with putting a player on the practice team.

A player doesn't have to clear waivers to go on injured reserve. The team can just designate a player to be on injured reserve, like they did with Vander Esch last year after it was decided he needed surgery. Trust me, they did not subject Vander Esch to waivers.

And think about it realistically - a player eligible for injured reserve couldn't even pass the physical required to sign with another team anyway, so how could he be claimed on waivers?

I think he is forgetting the bonus acceleration.

They save 3.25 MM (2.5 in salary and 750K in likely to be earned roster bonuses).

But the cap hit for his bonus was 1MM this year and another 1MM for each of the next two years. Releasing him means the 2MM in out years accelerates into this year.

3.25 - 2.00 = 1.25.

(From that I'm guessing the 100K workout bonuses were already paid also but who knows).

Maybe it's true that passing a physical isn't required, and is just a protection thing for the teams. That makes some sense. But that still doesn't apply to a player going on injured reserve because that player isn't subject to waivers.

I get owners already have several millions or billions but if I have to choose what’s best for the team or the player I’m always gonna go with the team, even if it does mean I’m supporting the owners as a result.
