The defense is a hot mess

With Gregory back we can move DLaw and Griffin inside on passing downs. Don’t understand his 6 game suspension.

I didn't realize it was 6 weeks. Is he actually suspended or is that just the earliest he can return given when he filed for reinstatement?

You forgot the biggest issue - the DC has never really been a quality DC, especially his recent stints in Atlanta and Miami.

The DC hasn't put good defenses on the field consistently. Again, why are people expecting him to suddenly turn into a good DC?
Wasn’t a fan of the hiring but the cards are stacked against the defense with the way the off season and injuries have played out

I don't know why fans are surprised.
Lawrence got his big contract and went AWOL.
Aldon Smith hasn't played in five years.
Our "best" pass rusher likes to sack pot.
Our best linebackers are injury prone.
Our best corner was a starting safety before he returned to his original position.
Our DTs don't get pressure up the middle.
Our safety is undersized.

Unless we can get Trevor Lawrence or a blue chip OT, it's defense all the way next draft.

Agree. Nolan may get more rush using a 4 man line primarily. DLaw, Griffen, Smith n Gregory will be tough to stop... none of these guys are 3-4 OLBs truly.

I think for this year the talent is way more 4-3, don't force the scheme. Off-season it was said scheme will fit talent, is it?

They need a Safety.
I sort of think what you are saying.

I am not knowledgeable enough to know if it's the players don't fit the scheme..

Or visa versa.

But they are not anywhere working it right.

Griffen has been surprisingly ineffective. Tank has become unable to rush the passer. How much that the LBers being out is at fault and the DBs are just trailing WR who are just WIDE open in both games.

I do not have an answer.

Don’t get me wrong, I was tired of our predictable four man rush, which was exclusively a one gap scheme, and regularly getting gashed by the run. The opposition knew exactly what we were doing. But, this isn’t the answer either.

It’s all sizzle and no steak. Instead of being predictable it’s just unsound. And at some stage we’ve got to get pressure on the quarterback. Let Griffen and Lawrence occasionally put their hands in the dirt and get after the quarterback.

This defense sucks and it’s not the talent. It’s the rediculous scheme.

lol........all sounded great until your conclusion at the end. Then you got it all wrong.

this defense sucks because the players suck. Doesn’t matter which scheme.

Yes, underwhelmed with this defense thus far, it is early and I hope Randy can add something later but this thing looks really bad right now.

Its not the scheme, its the player having to figure it out on the fly without minicamps or a preseason. They have had exactly 8 days of being able to tackle someone, they will settle in.

they suck, just face facts.

I'm more disturbed that Nolan sees it and will just rush 4 at times. The blitzes are predictable too. I'm not a fan of this defense through 2 weeks. And I don't even think the issue are the players.

yha because the players are sooo good.

You forgot the biggest issue - the DC has an inconsistent past, with his recent stints in Atlanta and Miami being blah.

The DC hasn't put good defenses on the field consistently. Again, why are people expecting him to suddenly turn into a good DC?

He fielded a decent D in Atlanta in 2012, but then the defenses there fell off the map in 2013 and 2014. His defenses the two year before Atlanta in Miami were average. 2009, he fielded a decent defense in Denver. He had a good run in Baltimore but that was over 15 years ago.

And what is the history and past of our players. You guys are laughable blaming the coordinator.

Maybe Nolan keeps getting hired to run defenses where teams invest heavily on offense and give him the scraps. Things must improve, especially in the secondary, but whatever the scheme, who are the players on that side of the ball who would even get a vote for the pro bowl, just one vote?

Not 1 in the secondary where our rookie 2nd rounder is clearly the best player.
Not 1 vote for any of our LBs....LVE was good at WLB, but is not a MLB.
If Aldon Smith gets some sacks, he might get a pro bowl vote.

We signed a bunch of players who are long in the tooth who were let go by their previous teams and not courted by anyone offering good money. We put most of our money on the offense, which is why I don’t understand going cheap on OL and TE backups because you are counting on winning with offense.

Jerry was significantly below the cap last year, and he’s significantly below the cap this year....while we need better backups on offense and better players on defense.

yha because the players are sooo good.

Well they were good before they got here. Chido, Lewis and Diggs were all very good college players. Everson Griffen was good last year. They were good this offseason when y'all were predicting them to be a playoff team. Now they can't play? Please. You know what isn't good though?Mike Nolan. He's not sooo good.

Don't other teams have that problem though?

in lawrences defense he does not look natural coming out of 2 point stance. His technique flat out sucks, johnston alluded to it in the broadcast.
