If this team is rebuilding, do we have the right HC?

When Mike McCarthy was hired last January, it was pretty obvious this front office and probably Big Mac himself believed this team was close to being a legit contender. I would argue that’s why Jerry hired him- to be the HC of a contender.

But as we all have watched so many of our starters go down with injuries, along with big drops in performance from many of the highest paid players, and with glaring holes on defense, it has seemed clear this team is due for a major overhaul.

Serious Question: Is Mike McCarthy the right Head Coach for a rebuild?
  • Is he capable of doing the long, hard and painful work of getting bad in order to get better?
  • Can he draft and develop players?
  • Can Big Mac be the Jimmy Johnson type who can break down, then rebuild the culture here?
My belief is I don’t think MM is that kind of HC. But I’m not sure Jerry is willing or able to accept how bad his roster really is.

What say you? Is Big Mac the right HC for a rebuild?

I honestly don't think so. For a rebuild, you'd think you should bring in a new guy with new ideas who can form a culture and start from scratch -- that's not McCarthy.

I think 2020 slapped Jerry hard in the face. It was a shock to him, and a lot of us too.

It'll definitely be interesting to see what approach this organization takes over the off-season.

we (the nation and its doctors) will first have to eradicate covid 19 before those questions can be appropriately addressed. if the recent house cleaning is in any way a product of his insistence that complainers and underachievers be shown the door, i'd regard that as a very good sign.

Do you want to risk future seasons on it to find out?

Do you have any positives to point to with McCarthy?

Jerry will quadruple down on this team so it doesn't really matter. Once you're in the country club it's hard to get kicked out.

If they win a wilcard game it might buy him 5 years.

Dallas needs to see things fail... Then fail again before they consider making change.

If I run this franchise i'm changing coaches for sure and i'm moving mountains to get the #1 pick in the draft.

I honestly dont know. I was meh about the hire in the first place but tried to be optimistic. However I wanted someone like Meyer to come in and even moreso if it is a rebuild. Honestly I am making a move for Bieniemy or Saleh if they are interviewing for HC positions. We need someone in here that has worked under someone that knows 2020 football. I personally like Saleh mainly for the fact he may scare the players to play.

I think I mentioned something like this the other day.

I would say no, but I also doubt Jerry is thinking total rebuild....

Probably more like the offense will be fine when players return and replace a few players on defense and away we go.....which supports he desire to keep MM due to the contract.

Considering the state of the rest of the division and his age....I'd wager quite a bit that he goes in that direction....and why we wont be seeing any fire sale type activity next week.

They only need to rebuild the D, and possibly a LT. The offense is set. We just need to get into the playoffs every year like Mike did in GB. Once you’re in anything can happen. We don’t need a top 5 D to win the whole thing.

I agree. I don’t think Jerry wants to smell the coffee right now. He will still be drinking and selling the Koolaide until the castle collapses. This is where Jerry’s natural optimism kills him as a GM. Things have to get really bad to force him to accept reality.

And if we are going into a rebuild, I don’t think Big Mac is a culture changer. Maybe I’m wrong.

i don't know if the f/o thinks this is a rebuild...but i do think they give McCarthy at least the length of his contract.
and probably the chance to continue to bring in his kinda players.

No, he isn't, he was hired to take this team from here to there, not start over back there. He's not equipped to do that because that takes a different skill set.

If the team was going to approach a rebuild, then a coach like Rhule or Meyer would have been preferable as they both understand the rebuild process and not just the acquisition of the right players but the mindset necessary to get them to buy in.

The single most critical element necessary to a successful rebuild is connection. That's why Jimmy was good at that, and he gets knocked with the Dolphins but he did improve that team, just couldn't get rid of a sacred QB.

There seems to be a connection missing between McC and this team, it's not a total disconnect but I think he has made a critical mistake early on with this team and while the intention was apparent, the execution was poor.

The players on this team didn't dislike Garrett, in fact they liked him, but they didn't trust him. Too many sideline mistakes and that fiasco in ATL with Green and humiliating him resonated with the team.

McC wants to win over the players so he goes for it, which is always what the players want, which is why they're not coaching. He didn't win them over, he failed them. He's not like Pederson or Riverboat Ron, they go for it, it's in their DNA. The he compounds that with another questionable decision the very next week.

McC was trying to win over the players when he should have been all about winning the game. Every player in the NFL knows you go for the tie on the road and keep yourself in the game.

McC is not an energy coach. Carroll is older than McC but he is an energy coach, he could handle a rebuild. McC would be way down my list of current NFL HC's for a rebuild. Very close to the bottom.

Depends on who you listen to, only time will tell and not sure jerry has enough time left to find out with MM, jerry is the insurmountable problem in big D not sure MM or any HC can truly over come that. MM will be in Dallas at least 1-2 more seasons IMHO so we should see where it all goes. Jerry may shock us and dump MM but I just do not see it.

That’s a very interesting take Coach. So far I would have to say McCarthy does not appear to be a fiery motivator. I don’t know obviously what he’s like behind closed doors. But he doesn’t appear to have built any kind of coalition, lol.

But is seems pretty obvious to the casual observer that this is, and has been for too long, a very sick culture. Until a HC is able to truly address that, we are still drinking blue Koolaide

No. He was never the right guy for the job. We hired a seemingly remade offensive guru that made no improvements to our offense while out defense went through a complete overhaul and every defensive player regressed in on field performance. Now instead of competing for the east in a cakewalk year we are one of the worst teams in nfl history and will begin a 3-5 year defense rebuild. Complete waste of head coach hire, probably waste money paying dak. The only hope we have to compete for nfce in the coming years is philly is about 68million over the cap next year and must cut some talent.

I'm personally very on the fence as to what I'd prefer to do...

The case is debatable either way.

I think the biggest thing is getting the multitude of past regime types out of here and Jerry making it clear somehow that his HC is the boss.

I dont know that he sees his way of doing things as a problem, so the latter probably wont happen.

Part of me wants to face facts and tear it down, but another tells me this is an offense that can be great....and 3-4 different defensive starters can make that unit respectable.

No team in the NFC is all that great and the division isnt going to improve any time soon, so a 3-4 seed isnt difficult to reach with a few improvements on defense. Take chances from there.

I'm nearly positive Jerry will go in that direction, and I'm about 60% convinced that's the right move lol.

I don't think we have the right coach in general. Even when we made the hire I was like meh. This team needs a disciplinarian to counteract jerry's terrible coddling.

I don't think so. I thought so, but, not anymore. Maybe if the coach fires some of his coaches, gets players more to his liking. Then, maybe, I don't really know.

All I know is this ain't working right now. lol
