MNF was originally on ABC with Frank Gifford, Don Meredith and Howard Cosell and then in 1984 ABC bought ESPN and then shifted MNF to ESPN and since then in 1995 Disney bought ABC. Chris and Al are under contracts with NBC not SNF so unless Disney buys out their contracts AND NBC decides to accept that, it probably would mean there will be different announcers just like when MNF switched from ABC to ESPN. I like the SNF theme, although I like the original by Pink the best but Carrie Underwood is better to look at, but I doubt that comes with SNF.

I might be incorrect but I'm pretty sure Disney didn't move MNF from ABC to ESPN until 2006. Which, I'm also pretty sure, was the year NBC's Sunday Night Football started.

Here's the thing. The NFL made a very deliberate choice to tank Monday Night Football all by themselves in order to prop up their new darling, Sunday Night Football.

Once the NFL's mind was made up to give the Sunday night package to NBC (after years of it being a pretty mediocre game on ESPN), and to build up Sundays at the expense of Mondays, I think Disney made the right call for themselves in moving MNF from ABC to ESPN. Did it cheapen the MNF brand? Sure, but that brand was about to be pissed on by the NFL schedule-makers anyway. This way, they did ESPN a huge favor by keeping them relevant with live NFL football. Considering how things have played out with video on the internet in the years since then, they've been proven very right. If they let ESPN lose live NFL games and counted on staying relevant simply because fans needed ESPN for highlights, they'd have lost that gamble in a big bad way.

the way I see it if your paying billions for the rights, what is a few million more to keep the same announcers?
That is how it should be done, but no telling what would happen.
I dont really care for the music aspect, or theme song, I really dont like the current them, I mute that, lol. I dont think that really matters.
But the announcers do matter.
Thanks for the history on that, didnt know abc bought espn, if so they were stupid to move mnf from abc to espn.

How can you not like the original SNF theme which was Joan Jett's I Hate Myself For Loving You with different lyrics. Most people really like the original MNF theme and then for several years they went with Hank William's country theme and when he had a falling out with ESPN they went back to the original and most people were happy they did. I used to have that as my ring tone on my phone and when it went off there was always someone that said MNF. I switched my tone now to the FOX Sports theme.and people now when they hear my phone ring say NFL football.

I just wish they'd take any games away from ESPN. It's bad enough the pregame sucks but Louis Riddick could win a talking contest with Valley Girls. Why in the hell do they continue with this 3 man booth failure? It is offensive to the senses.

And what happened to Fowler-Herbstreit doing the MNF games? Herbstreit is the best at research and information of all the color guys. He still knows more about the players form that first game they did than the crew on MNF. Levy and Griese would have been fine. All Riddick does is continue to interview for a GM job.

I wasn't sure of the dates when MNF actually switch from ABC to ESPN I just knew it was after ABC bought ESPN, but didn't realize it was also after Disney bout ABC. I do know that after FOX, CBS and NBC who had existing contracts that both ABC (Disney) and NBC both were upset when back in 2012 the NFL Network started televising games on Thursday nights saying that the commercial networks should have had a chance to get Thursday Night Football. When the networks time to renew their contracts in 2014 a big sticking point was Thursday Night Football so for two years NBC and CBS split halves of season where they broadcast the games but the NFL Network still got the opening Thursday Night game. Starting in 2016 NBC got all of the Thursday Night games except week 2 each year that was aired on NFL. Then in 2018 FOX took over Thursday Night Football again except weeks 2 and 3 which is on NFL. I've never understood why the NFL wanted to televise games when they can make more money form the networks for televising the games than what they get from advertisers during the games that have a smaller audience than the networks get.

As ESPN declines, Disney is doing all it can to keep it relevant.

In the investment world, it's usually not a good idea to throw good money to the bad.

Would prefer NBC to keep it, please.

ESPN will screw it up and it will fail miserably like most of their business ventures. NBC should sell it and watch it crumble and pick the NFL rights in a few years.

I remember as a kid watching Sunday Night games on ESPN and thinking wow this sucks. That was before I knew any better.

Monday Night Football used to be incredible.. I was usually watching WCW or WWF (Sting/HBK fan) at that age but I would still watch a lot of MNF games.

ESPN does a great job with college football. I think they need to stay in that lane.

MNF uses their original theme still and listen to Joan Jett's song, the music the tune and you should hear the SNF original theme. I'm guessing that NBC had to pay Jett something to use her tune. Even the SNF theme now is just a change of that original theme, but it's different enough that it doesn't sound like Jett's song.

If that happens, Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth should move over to ESPN.
