Ar'Darius Washington TCU Safety

Washington is going to be a great test study. I think he needs a creative DC to have him in good situations. Might be more of a nickel/slot and play safety in certain packages, but don't think he could be an every down player in this league. Would I still draft him? Maybe, but not until day 3.

The biggest issue for the Cowboys is finding a true, single high safety with range. There just isn't many in this class at all. Team may have to look more towards fa. I certainly would look into signing Hooker to a 1yr deal. He is an ideal fit and if somehow they can figure out his durability issues, he could be a pro bowl talent.
I think he's an NFL player, but agree he needs to be in specific schemes.

There is a reason why we rarely see such small prospects at the position, there will be areas in the game the smaller statured player just cannot compete.
Hey brother, do you think if we trade a 2nd, third round pick and add one of those top 4 comp picks we can get back in the first round? I would love two get two first round picks for the defense this draft. I don’t like the trade down to 20 stuff I am reading. We should try to get as many first round talents as we can.

I know our 3rd rd comp on the trade chart can get us to the top of rd 2 along with pick 42 (our 2nd rd pick). There are always ways to get up there, just depends on how much you are willing to pay. This is the kind of draft, you look to move back then up.

He's 5'8 in a college program. He might be 5'6 for all we know.

But this is missing the entire point, that yes, size matters to Quinn. Or at least has historically. Earl's an HoF talent and also played at around 200 lbs, he's not comparable to Washington.
We have to see what he weighs in at. If hes 5'9 198 i can dig that. If hes 5'8 185 probably not

Just listened to a joint podcast with Jeff Cavanaugh and Voch Lombardi. They both have the TCU's Safeties as 1-2 at the position. Surprisingly, they both like Washington a little better, even with his lack of size, being just 5'8. Cavanaugh loves the player and has a 1st rd grade on him, but knows he won't get drafted in the first rd due to his lack of physical traits. His player comp was the Honey Badger.

We have heard recently that Dan Quinn isn't a stickler for necessary size and length for a particular position, that if the player is good, he we find a way to best used his skillset. Last year Winfield was taken in rd 2, despite his lack of size being just 5'9 and has had a very good rookie season.

I see Washington being rated as a 4th rd prospect on many big boards. I have no problem taking him there, or maybe even in the third rd, as he and his teammate Moehrig are excellent fits for that single high role, in which there just aren't many in this year's class.
5'8/9 is not a problem IMO, what is a problem is he's listed at 175LBS, that is just too small to take on a TE, RB heck most WR in the NFL.

I disagree for the Cowboys. If they want Farley/Surtain they will have to draft one of them at 10. They probably won’t be there past 12. The Athletic has them rated as the 10th and 11th prospects. From what I understand Dane Bugler talks to scouts and has good idea how the scouts perceive the players. If we like those guys we will have to pick them at 10. I really don’t want to draft Bolton but we would have to get back into the first round to get him or Moehrig.

There is decent depth at linebacker, but extremely thin at free safety, especially one who fits that single high role. Might have to either trade up or just fill via free agency.

Kazee did play for Quinn while at Atlanta, where he did have some height/weight limitations, now he is a little small for the position, but not 5'8 either.

5'10, shorter arms, small hands... good football player.

Washington had a down year and was flat smoked versus Texas Tech.
But he apparently played really well after that.
I'm still shocked he came out as a Soph.
PFF rated him as the 60th best safety in D1 but he was about 100 after the Tech game so obviously bounced back well.

Since that's the game I watched live I am pretty biased against him.

Moehrig to me is a far superior player.
Better physical tools and a much higher upside.

Ar'darius Washington to me is Jourdan Lewis. He's a good player that's tough as nails but smaller in stature.

We'll see what he runs this off-season because that that size he's gonna need a great 40 time to go in the top 3 rounds.

Where is the flat smoked? Im guessing they would've showed it on game highlights. I see the corners getting smoked not Washington.

I really like the way Washington plays and I would pull the trigger on him in the 4th round, any day.

However, he’d still have to be signed off on by Will McClay, who is a stickler for length in DB’s. I hope I’m wrong, but I can’t see Dallas taking him even if Quinn does like him. If he truly is there in the 4th, maybe McClay would sign off on him.

You’re correct. And Will’s pet cat was also Robinson from Tulsa and he never saw the field so I’m a little nervous about his ideal players on D. Very nervous actually.

Robinson may not be any good but remember Donavon Wilson was the 4th safety on the depth chart until are secondary imploded with injuries and bad play. Hopefully these young guys get some offseason work. That is why I am favor of drafting players like Surtain, Collins, and JOK with our first picks. Those three are plug and play guys in my opinion.

Like most, I like the player. But I think Cavanaugh is a little too bullish on Washington.

Objectively, 5'8 is frigging short man. I'm sure with his instincts he will be a good role player, but can he actually be a starter?

Pff has Washington ranked as a top 40-45 player in the entire draft...in what world would he be ranked their 60th best safety in D1??? I can smell the bs from here

My dude I am not gonna debate you when you come armed with zero but "highlights", lol.
The literal broadcast team on TV called out how he was being picked on based upon his size.

This was the worst Tech offense in 15 years so it isn't like they were throwing bombs over him all day but they were using bigger WRs into his zone areas and picking up first downs in a game where it was mostly defense.

PFF ended up ranking him their 61st graded D1 Safety.
He'll also end up ranking in the bottom 15% of all Safeties in size.

I think he is being overrated right now but we shall see.

Jeff C is gonna grow into a heck of a draftnik type but it's still only been a few years and you gotta learn not to fall in love with guys.
The reality is almost none of these guys are as good as you think they are watching them versus college kids.

Washington burst on the scene because he had 5 INTs as a 20 year old RS freshman.
He had 0 last year which doesn't mean he sucks but that he regressed to the mean.

FWIW I was a 5'10" and 3/4, 205 pound collegiate safety listed at 6' and 210. lol.
I was a good 2 inches taller than Zach Thomas.

There have been a lot of really good 5'9"-ish safeties so I'd have few worries there but 179 pounds is pretty scary.

Im not debating i just asked a question. And again, if he got smoked id think it would be on the highlights. Maybe dont use hyperbole next time. Dont blame me

FWIW Dane Brugler released his top 100 yesterday.
Ar'Darius wasn't on it.

I mean, like i said in another thread, all these dudes are the same. Get alot right get alot wrong. No different than actual scouts. There were a good handful of players last year who were constantly mocked out of round 1 but were drafted round 1.

He is 5'08" some say a little shorter than 5'08" and Brugler said he can't put someone with that lack of size in his top 100. He did say Washington had good reactions and movement but at 5'08" (5'07" 3/4) he just could not put him in that top 100
