You need a great offense and a great defense to win a Super Bowl

We all know of the Cowboys futility for the past 25-26 years. It all started when Jerry and Jimmy couldn’t get along and Jimmy left. Jerry said he could win with 500 other coaches and hired the idiot Switzer and Jerry claimed victory. Yeah, that didn’t last long. Having, Troy, Michael, Emmitt, and that awesome offensive line doesn’t happen very often. Now so many years later here we are with arguably an even better offense than what we had in the early 90’s. It’s a different league now with the emphasis on the passing game. With a healthy QB our offense has been #1 in the NFL for the last 2 years. Injuries to the offensive line and QB sunk our 2020 season. Can’t win in the NFL with a mediocre offense and a terrible defense. We had both when Tyron, Collins, Fred and eventually Dak went down. The bottom line is that you need both a great offense AND a great defense to win a Super Bowl. Brady didn’t win the SB this year. His defense did. Brady only threw for 201 yards. But he had 3 td’s. So you need both a good QB, offensive line but more importantly you need a better than average defense. We haven’t had that for many, many years. If Jerry doesn’t do something about the defense this offseason then Brady at his prime couldn’t win here.

Top ten on both sides of the ball: every Cowboys SB champ, and the last 8 SB champs.

This notion that you can just load up on offense and drag a bad defense to a title is fantasy. That only works against bad teams.

That offensive ranking is misleading, we never go toe to toe with a good team; matching them score by score until the end of the game. They go up 3 scores and then we conjure up a 2nd half of stats that get us to within 10 pts. Tons of yardage, rarely any that have any impact when the game is in play.

The way people describe this offense you would think we were the greatest show on turf with Kurt Warner when we're rarely even in the game when it matters...we'll come back at the end to make it look respectable, but never give you a full hard fought game.
Duck, incoming........

Where is the Prescott offense from Quarter 1 to Quarter 3??

If Dallas could just get lucky enough to field an above average defense, they could easily have the ability to sniff a conference title game.

The current process we have for evaluating defensive talent is broken. Has been since Parcells left. But the reality is that NFL decision makers are hilariously simple minded and stubborn people.
I''ve talked about this among my friends. When a coach gets to coaching in the NFL, he is at the top of the ladder. Sooooooo, generally people in this position are very arrogant and closed minded about their ideas. They got where they got by knowing, so changing what got them there is almost impossible.

Mike Martz never quit running those long developing routes even though it got his QB's killed. First Warner then Bulger.

Kyle Shanahan is a brilliant O mind, but he's now lost 2 super bowls because he refuses to implement some sort of ball control facets to his playcalling to ice victories. Sure, keeping your foot on the pedal works against DET and JAX, but against the good ones like Brady and Bellychickens, you're playing into their hands. How can you overcome a big deficit if the other team keeps making first downs? Easy if they're taking 7 step drops, just sack 'em!!!

Absolutely no way, sorry Rockport but the OL at this point is not better, the first string RB is a joke compared to Emmit, I'll take Novacek over either TE we currently have. The WR corp as a whole might be better as far as what we currently have but I'll take Irvin over any of them(guy was a baller) and I'll also take a love discipline approach/make no mistake Aikman over Dak.
Irvin is a top 10 all time WR. If he hadn't played in the same era as the best all time WR, he'd be known as such.

Our O is good enough w/ some OL tweaks/upgrades. Wishing for super quality on O is what Jerry does, and it keeps our D in the trash.

You don't have to have a great team on either side of the ball but you need a great team on at least one side of the ball. We have mostly observed that being on the defensive side of the ball but It can work the other way as well... that's what it seems the Cowboys are trying to do.
Great Offensive teams mostly lose to great D's in the playoffs. Just happened again.

Though you can look at some what ifs
IF the Chiefs had not lost both their starting center and starting LT in the last weeks before the SB. Give Mahoones more protection and that game might have been a contest.

Of course. There's what ifs every game, every super bowl.

KC also has a good D. 3 consecutive D stops in the last super bowl won KC that super bowl.

Brady made everyone on his team better.
.
Dak puts up some good numbers, but I've yet to see the other things that make a player great....at least I don't see why he's worth $40,000,000.00 per .....
.
If Dak is worth $40, Brady must be worth at least $160.

So you’re saying that Brady had something to do with TB’s defense shutting down Mahomes and that offense just by being there? That’s quite the theory.

Or a good offense and a good defense that gets hot in the playoffs ala the Giants.

Or a great offense and an average defense that gets takeaways. But if your D is bottom 12 in scoring and weak at takeaways....well just ask Fouts and Marino how that will turn out.

You're late to the party.
I've already addressed this.

I don't think you "need" a great defense to win in today's NFL because frankly there is no such thing anymore. There was no great defense in the league in 2020. I mean name a defense that could hold every team in the playoffs to single digits like the truly great defenses we have seen do? Even if the offense could only muster say 14-17 points? The NFL doesn't really allow a great defense anymore. You can't hit the QB, or receivers and the offensive line can hold. Only offenses who stink horribly will have trouble scoring in today''s NFL. What you need is a GOOD defense.. One that can OCCASIONALLY get stops and create turnovers. Rankings be damned.. Give me a defense that can get me the ball back when I am down one score with under 3 minutes left. Give me a defense that keeps me in the game even when my offense is struggling and maybe even helps the struggling offense by generating some turnovers and provides a short field once in a while as opposed to just lying down and letting the other team build a three score lead.. and always making our own offense go 80 yards to paydirt. We have not had such a defense in Dallas for a very long time. Which is why no matter how great we have been on offense we have consistently failed to make any noise in the playoffs. We've tried to get it down with mediocre to bad defenses. That simply aint gittin it done. We need an actual good defense with actual defensive playmakers.. Until we get that we may as well make plans to go to Cabo by the middle of January cause our team aint gonna be playin then anyway.
