I don't know what was reported yesterday but because the Cowboys released Smith and his salary was already guaranteed it hits their cap no matter what happens next. Green Bay is not picking up his contract like they would have to in a trade. This is what makes the timing of Jaylon's release so strange. The benefit comes next year when they do not have to take his $9.2 million salary against their cap.

It had everything to do with that injury clause in his contract.

He had wrist surgery in January of 2021. Therefore he couldn't pass a physical in March, when the Cowboys could have (and quite possibly would have) released him. That meant that they were stuck overpaying him $7 million this year. That same clause (and again not being able to pass a physical) would have had them on the hook for $9 million in salary. An even worse situation.

It's been well documented that they asked him to remove that clause and he refused. And then they cut him. It's no more complicated than that.

I love it whenever someone asks the player about an injury. It’s always the same answer, I’m good to go never felt better…even after surgery. I don’t know why anyone gives that credibility.

I think this same meme could apply to Jaylon defenders that are now trying to blend in with the crowd.

Anyone who defended Jaylon probably isn’t a football-iq type of fan. No one can defend Jaylon’s inability to shed a block or his skating in the running lanes. But Jaylon was a Cowboy with a great comeback from a devastating injury. Easy to see why some were happy to support him.
