Another thread reply sparked the idea for this topic. First, I really like the "instrument" and I also find it interesting how others view and critique vocalists. If you can, list a male and a female vocalist. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t have to be music you particularly like. I have a couple male voices; couldn't decide on one.

I heard Jimi hated his voice lol. If you haven't figured it out yet, I love Jimi's music!

Somewhat sappy music but a voice like velvet. Had trouble picking a song of hers.

Can't go wrong with Karen Carpenter, she had an amazing voice. As far as Hendrix goes love his playing but think his vocals are average at best.
Some of my favorites are....
Robert Plant
Joni Mitchell
Joan Baez
Freddie Mercury
Steven Tyler
Elvis Presely
Mick Jagger

Yeah, but Jimi's voice has a certain emotion and feeling vs. strictly evaluating it technically if that makes any sense. This is one reason I started the thread. Obviously no wrong answer unless you really are tone deaf. I'm with you on Plant, Joni, Joan, Freddie, and Elvis. The others don't hit me as much.

It makes perfect sense, that's why i included Mick Jagger .

That Karen Carpenter clip is a trip.

Two observations;

One, who was her hair stylist? Even for 70s standards that is brutal and i've seen other clips of her that were just as bad.

Two, i listen to that song and i feel like i'm eating breakfast just before heading to school. I'm 12 again.

Yeah, as I mentioned in OP, strictly the vocal instrument. You don't have to like the music.

There is something about her voice for me? Seems so easy for her but you can almost feel the demons she was fighting especially after knowing her story.

Got the school part. One of my Mom's favorites. Use to have to listen to it in the car all the time.

Don't misunderstand pete, i think she has one of the best voices in pop history, it may be 'syrupy' as such but there is no denying her talent.

There are few stories in music history more tragic than hers.

Another favorite vocalist is David Lee Roth, was his voice great from a technical aspect, certainly not. But he made the most of what he had and it fit those first 6 VH albums perfectly. Sadly his voice has been shot for years.
