On today's Talking Cowboys the subject came up of who has been underperforming and who really needs to step up. Leighton Vander Esch was the unanimous choice. It was pointed out how he is constantly going backwards to try to make plays instead of attacking. They said this is why the Cowboys didnt pick up his 5th year option and how he has declined since his rookie year. If the Cowboys are going to make a run for the playoffs, Vander Esch needs to step up, or be replaced. I'm glad to see him being called out publicly. He is either afraid to get hurt or trying to save himself for his next team.

LVE's injuries in the past have prevented him from performing at his best. Fans trashing his effort or any other personal crap need to get a clue. You can clearly see he's not as mobile and has slowed down.

We can also see that he’s protecting himself and is afraid to hit or get hit. And when it’s at that point, he needs to stop playing.

Not just that he's slow, but he isn't bringing people down with one tackle.

100%…. I feel bad for the guy if he can no longer function as a LBer. Sorry. But now that we know you can’t (or won’t) do the job— go sit on the bench and let’s get someone out there who can actually function in the role.

We are basically playing 10 vs 11 with LVE out there

I feel bad for him too that injuries have ruined him. But that doesn’t too change that fact and it means he has to be taken off the field. It’s not a charity and he’s a liability out there.

I think people forget that the dude suffered a career threatening neck injury in 2020. Before that he was actually a good player for us. It is clear that the injury has sapped quite a bit of his flexibility and athleticism. Injuries, especially spinal injuries, happen and they do have long term impacts on athletes. Look at what happened to Jaylon. He never quite recovered from the drop foot and you could always tell something was not right.

He had a neck issue and I wonder if he's buying the "had" part of that.

When Moose had that cervical fusion, he did not block the same way and who could blame him? I had that and couldn't imagine running through those lines like he did.

Vander Esch does not play with the same speed or style but I do think the injuries are playing a part in this.

Yep. Jerry is not running a halfway house for charity cases. Although sometimes it seems he needs to be reminded of that fact lol

Expectations were high at the beginning of the season for LVE. He was injured last season and was reported to have gotten right in the offseason. He had a decent training camp. But then Micah Parsons happened. Having this measuring stick around to constantly remind everyone how far LVE has fallen was a bad thing for how everyone is perceiving LVE. I actually think LVE is okay, he's just not Parsons, but who is?
