He was signed because they think he knows a lot about the Cowboys' defense. Sure the Giants know they're going nowhere this year, but it's still a division game, they'd like nothing better than to beat Dallas and keep them from clinching the division this week.

Don't underestimate rivalries in the NFL, sometimes it's the silliest things that matter to a team...

You do know that pretty much every signing goes through the PS right

Not all signings go to the practice squad. Pretty big fall for a player that was drafted in the second round and was getting a lot of playing time this season.

What signings this year doesn't start with PS designation. Since the covid stuff that's how most teams do it

Things are a lot different this year because of the situation we’re in but Smith wasn’t signed to the Packers practice squad when Green Bay signed him earlier in the season. He filled the roster spot of outside linebacker Chauncey Rivers.

I thought he would latch on to some team in the playoffs needing help at LB. I give him credit for continuing to try to make the dream come true even if he has to go to a PS. Giants aren't going to the playoffs. I guess he hopes to stay in shape on a PS and maybe get claimed by some playoff team needing a LB.

I don’t understand the hate for Smith. He had a horrific injury, came back, and played pretty well for a couple of years. It’s not his fault the FO gave him a bad contract (as in bad for the team). Would you turn it down? The injury just destroyed his athleticism. It was no one’s fault. It’s past time to let it go.

Jaylon is prime example of why college players should opt of bowl games.

Bowl games are a cherished part of a college players career. Most college players need those bowl games to improve their draft status. Smith didn’t he was already projected as a top 10 pick. I wouldn’t have much respect for a player that would opt out of games especially a bowl game.

I wish Jaylon well. He's a good guy. Other players simply played a lot better in his position, so he had to go. He may have a shot yet of salvaging an NFL career. I would be glad to see him succeed. If it doesn't work out, there's always the CFL, and I don't mean that sarcastically. There are opportunities up in Canada for athletes who want to play football.

He’s only good enough to make the Giants practice squad. Safe to say this is the last gasp of his NFL career.
The practice squad is different this year (and last). The relaxed rules mean that you can stash newly-signed vets there while they get up to speed (and in shape) without having to waste a roster spot on them. That's what Baltimore did with Latavius Murray, Devonta Freeman and Le'Veon Bell. The Giants would probably sign Jaylon this way initially even if they thought he really was an answer for them.

He's not, of course (an answer for them, or any question for that matter), so your larger point stands. He's done.
