This will be a little different, but for today's last word we go to Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay, the draft his yearly baby. On 105.3 The Fan this week, Will was asked about the Cowboys' fourth of four fifth-round picks, "Big" John Ridgeway, the 6-5, 321-pound 1-technique defensive tackle from Arkansas. Specifically, what made him so intriguing to the Cowboys?

"It's a big man's game, and big men who do the right things and know who they are," McClay said, meaning Ridgeway knows his responsibility is to clog the middle against the run, take on double-teams. "This guy knows who he is, knows what he's all about.

"And that's something that is going to be important to our defense, especially in our division. You know, moving forward you've got to win the division first, but you've got to stop the run first."

No kidding, and last year the Cowboys were only 16th against the run, giving up 112.8 yards a game, opponents rushing for more than 100 yards 13 times with 12 of those in the final 13 games. And need I point out in the playoff loss to San Francisco, the Niners went for 169 yards and two rushing touchdowns, one Deebo Samuel's 26-yard run.

Yeah, everyone needs a "Big John" in there to take some shots.

right 16th last year not great but 2018-2020 has to be a huge improvement i trust quinns trying to improve but needs mote then one season.

also didn't help not getting Gallimore back until way let in the season, OSI/BO were a rookies , cox got hurt.. LVE took time to trust his surgery's etc and learn quinns defense he wasn't terrible in the 9er game. im thinking even without much player turnover just changing calendar with the same player we would improve if they al stat the season healthy.

so anything from this draft should be a bonus..

Is Mick still on the Cowboy's payroll ?
Hard to be a journalist with that kind of conflict of interest.

...the trick is that you can be critical ( and Helman and Spags are very critical at times.) without being negative, demeaning, demoralizing, throwing shade, accusatory, or mocking ...like say one ex Cowboy Journalist...Bryan Broaddus... Now Bryan is a sports jock at Dallas's "Flagship" station 103.5 the Fan...Where along with the Fan Gang he can safely be "negative" on the Cowboys every chance he gets without retribution!

Wow, throwing out the insults....I know what it means. You re the one that needs to learn something. You need to learn a lot actually.
You can't handle the truth so insult as usual.
He was wrong to sling the insult, but he was right about it being a conflict of interest. Even if the reporter were Walter Kronkite or Edward R Murrow, the optics alone would be bad.

What?
So a reporter is not credible because he is on the payroll of the team?
Then all the crap that Kiper said is not credible because he is on the payroll of ESPN and we know how ESPN hates the Cowboys.

Not exactly an apples for apples comparison.

Kiper isn't being paid to talk about ESPN. He's being paid to talk about the draft, and other assorted things on his radio show. Spagnola is being paid to report about his employer. There's an inherent conflict of interest on that basis.

If you are not familiar with the Hogs D, they played a ton of 3-3-5 because the name of the game was stop the passing game after a horrible 2019. Ridgeway made his living pulling two blockers so he is very used to that. Odom did some wacky things like on a 3rd and long, like 15, he'd drop everyone back, except those 3 DL, to the marker and have them come forward if the ball was short of that. It had to be the craziest looking zone to the QB. He's looking at 8 pass defenders.

BTW, Barry Odom's defense was adopted, in part, by NFL DC's to slow down KC's passing offense and try and keep Hill in front of them. It worked and Mahomes began to make mistakes.

You serious?
It's hard to be objective writing about the boss when he's signing the paycheck.

Except every single one if them says the team or boss don't filter them, they have free reign to criticize and they do regularly on all the podcasts for the team
Good to hear.
I don't listen to Mickey.
He's not on the radio in Maryland .

I live in Maryland too. If you download the Cowboys app, you can listen to all the streams a day podcasts live. They have a different podcast group everyday. Players lounge is my favorite.

Columbia is expensive but nice. My son was recruited to Mount St. Joseph private school in Baltimore for baseball, didn't want to move to Baltimore. Columbia was close 20 minutes from school and out of Baltimore...lol
