Seems like the FO was/is very focused on building a top 5 defense. This kid may just be the final straw for Quinn's cake. Can you say "undrafted"?! "It looks like an uphill climb for Bryant, but he played well in the nation's best conference and has a skill set that can translate to the NFL, even if it doesn't lead to a roster spot right away."

* Bryant shares a nickname w/his new position coach, Cowboys assistant defensive line coach Leon Lett. From 1991-2000, Lett – known as "Big Cat" – made two Pro Bowls as a starter on the Cowboys' dominant, underrated defensive line that was a key factor in the club's three Super Bowl titles that decade.

One just can't have enough Big Cats/Kats!

Markavest "Big Kat" Bryant has good size and ability. Sadly, we are loaded at the DE spot. Unless he suddenly starts lighting it up in camp and throughout preseason or can contribute on special teams, Big Kat will most likely end up on the practice squad...if he makes it past waivers.

Jerry doesn't care about DE's being tough or physical. He just wants them to be fast. He wants speed off the edges. So the odds are already against Big Cat even before he takes his first snap.

A lot of those speedy DE's suck against the run and that's why I personally don't like them. Big Cat is my type of guy, but I'm not running the team. Good luck to this young man though, he'll need it.

Draft Scouting Report:
Rating: 62.79 (Role player)
Pro Comparison: Jonathan Wynn
Strengths:
Good sized edge rusher with active hands. Significant playing experience with a past in the SEC. Good overall strength. Will play to the whistle.

Weaknesses:
Rarely counters inside and that leaves the B gap very vulnerable for big run gains. Does not do a great job of containing the edge. Stiff athlete with below average change of direction skills.

Bryant never lived up to his recruiting hype at Auburn, and it took him his fifth collegiate year to truly be an impactful player. He is a stiff, upright player which almost instantly puts him at a disadvantage during his pass rush reps. Though Bryant has shown good strength, his hand technique is poor at the line of scrimmage. You would hope after five years in college that he would be a bit more refined, but his technique has never seemed to improve. His run defense is inconsistent at best. Even with his large tackle radius, he has trouble taking down ball carriers, usually going for arm tackles due to frequently being out of position. Bryant has poor game processing as well, often misreading plays, miss gap assignments, and often setting a poor edge.

Lack of Productivity in Pass Rush
For everything that I like about Bryant, this is the main point that keeps me from putting a first round grade on him. At the time of this writing, Markaviest has played in 36 games. During that time he’s only been able to collect a grand total of 10 sacks. That’s almost one sack for every four games played. As pass happy as the NFL is these days, you can’t have a first round pick putting up those types of numbers. When watching the tape, you see a player that can’t cause havoc on opposing offenses. I saw Bryant burn tackles off the snap and blow plays up. There are times that he will anticipate the snap, take a step, cross the lineman’s face, and get into the backfield untouched. But sadly, those plays aren’t the norm.

Throughout his career at Auburn, Bryant recorded 56 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks. In 2020, he was named a second-team All-SEC selection. Along with that, he was also named to the Bronco Nagurski Trophy watch list. The trophy recognizes the best linebacker in college football. Perhaps, he had his best season in 2021 with the Knights. He had his most productive season where he would record 50 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and six sacks.

Huge fan of his. But he likely goes to the practice squad and then gets picked up mid season and goes elsewhere.

Way too many times fans think our players will get plucked form the PS. Or in TC they think we have enough depth to trade them for picks or a player some think we need.

I do not recall that last time either has happened.
We fans, as I done it also, tend to over evaluate our own players. Kind of like...we like our guys ... concept.

3 TFL and 2 sacks came against the Juggernaut Memphis. And 7 tackles against the mighty Midshipmen from Navy. I don't think he makes the PS.

Well the PS is set at 16 players. I think he has a shot at that.
I need to look over the roster, as I have my 53 set, with a few I go back and forth between. I have not looked at a PS group yet.
Still too far away, but we have just under 4 weeks to go. So maybe for fun I will do that.

I don't see much in his college game footage other than effort.

Long arms, big hands but otherwise horrible athletic measurables.
- His 3-cone and SS times might be the worst I've seen for a player in that weight range.

He did look strong in game footage; although, he only did 23 bench reps.

Stand-up edge player in college (3-4 OLB and 4-2-5 DE).

He looks like poor man's Dorance Armstrong.

He's a little long in the tooth, but I think Tafua has a much better shot at making the roster than Bryant.

You’re right. Watch him be one of the first out lol

He likely will be.

Not NFL material.

Typical uninformed, lazy response from you.

Listed DEs on the team roster:

1) D-Law
2) Sam Williams
3) Dorance Armstrong
4) Tarell Basham
5) Dante Fowler, Jr.
6) Carlos Watkins
7) Chauncey Golston
8) Mike Tafua
9) Markaviest Bryant

This is not including Micah Parsons whenever he lines up at times at DE as an Edge Rusher.

That makes it 10 players at DE fighting for 4-5 DE roster spots = LOADED

Want to keep on making foolish comments?

Mike Tafua's game footage is better than Bryant's, IMO.
