Great lists. Here’s some more…
  • “Coaches are really excited about_____”
  • “______ has worked really hard on his footwork.” (Usually QBs or DBs)
  • “The game is really slowing down for him.”
  • “He brings his lunch pail every day.” (Translation: He’s not that talented but works hard)
  • “______will really push _____ for a starting position this year.”

Yeah, the (insert random journeyman) pushing for starting position rarely works out. Honestly, until last year I would’ve put anything about a random free agent going to show some results. It actually worked out last year, a lot of names came out of nowhere.

I was going to put a technique comment but the more I thought about it, when they go into detail and discuss a specific technique the player is trying to improve, it seems like there usually is some payoff.

I think "coaches are excited about" is 50/50.

It sometimes alerts us to players that end up doing something.

It is dependent on which media person says it.

These phrases are only good and true if there is a "BOOM" at the end.

That’s another good one. Defense and strong running games don’t hurt, but definitely been proven they’re not as necessary anymore. Some of these folks covering it still living in 70’s-80’s football.

Reverse that question and the answer is the same.

How many bottom half of the league defenses have won Super Bowls...? Dallas has had some good offenses over the last 15 years, but they still couldn't get over the hump.
