9 Best Superhero Movies Not Based on a Comic Book

By Neel Singh | MovieWeb
February 15, 2023

Superhero movies have long been a source of fascination for Hollywood. Long before Christopher Reeve made audiences believe a man could fly with 1978's Superman: The Movie and kickstarted the modern era of high-budget comic book features, the film industry had already spent decades bringing the adventures of costumed crusaders to the screen both in movies and on television.

The quintessential American superhero is one who traces their roots to the comic book world, where companies like DC and Marvel Comics have spent decades enthralling readers with stories about Superman, Batman, Spider-Man etc. But not every great superhero movie is based on a comic book, or originates from America. Let us take a look at superhero movies from around the world that did not need a comic-based source material to make an impact on the genre.

9 Unbreakable
8 Darkman
7 Chronicle
6 Krrish
5 Hancock
4 The Incredibles
3 Super
2 The Toxic Avenger

1 The Scarlet Pimpernel

Cashing in another two cents. The Incredibles is way too low at #4. Chronicle over Unbreakable??? Never saw Krrish to comment. No comment on The Scarlet Pimpernel simply because I understand the premise that the author was shooting for.

I am glad seeing Gunn tap into the wide ranging DC Universe. It should never be restricted to the handful of the most known characters.

His inclusion of Wildstorm characters does peek my interest. To be honest, I never bought any of the issues before or after DC acquired it but I do remember seeing them on newsstands.

My hope is that same enthusiasm will eventually introduce the Dakota/Earth-M Milestone characters at some point--especially if he really wants the reimagined DCU to gain a real edge. Both Wildstorm and Milestone started in the early 90's and I loved characters and teams like Static, Icon & Rocket and Blood Syndicate.

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow project is what interests me the most from Gunn's announcement. To say I was disappointed with CBS/The CW series would be an understatement. I am eager to see how the character is brought back, even if it starts with Kara Zor-El growing up in Argo City lol.

Super Girl again ...? After not long having the CW version finally end ..?

and then there's Superman: Legacy,... that on the surface, sounds very much like Superman Returns (kevin spacey version)

That's not what i hoped to start our DC-Gunn slinging !!

at least i'll get to see what Creature Commandoes ....

Looking forward to Gunn's Swamp Thing ... i wonder if it will be anything like DC Channel version. .. very dark and blood gory, no pulled punches ....

Someone will have to get me more familiar with Booster Gold

Yes. Supergirl again. Hopefully this time with more character depth and range. Plus, Supergirl in a time paradox in The Flash. ;)

Please please please do not let James Gunn be so stupid as to make another Superman Returns version of Kal-El. That would make me vomit.

My Quantumania review is posted in the Rate Movie thread.

Sorry @Stash. I only noticed two minor characters very VERY loosely connected in any way to The Micronauts/Microns. Folks like Arcturus Rann, Quark, etc., were no shows. :(

Would they be able to include Micronauts? I know Marvel had comics based on them, but don't think they owned the rights to the characters.

You’re right, they didn’t own the rights.

But I speculated that a company with Disney’s financial resources certainly could purchase the rights if they felt it was a worthwhile investment.

It was my hope that Hasbro had followed Sony's lead with Spider-Man and provided co-production rights to The Micronauts, while keeping other properties like ROM off the table. The deal would have had to be low-key in order for the characters' appearance to be a surprise but I thought it was conceivable.

The sharing arrangement between Sony and Disney has worked extremely well for both companies in the form of multiple movies. I was too hopeful in something that made too much sense would happen. In my opinion, the injection of one or two Micronaut characters into the leadership of the movie's rebels would have made that aspect of the storyline more 'relatable' to the audience--instead of the brand new characters they rolled with.

Kevin Feige and others subtly jabbed at Hasbro during the movie. Jentorra was a minor character connected with The Micronauts. Her name was given to the rebel leader. That cannot be a coincidence even though the movie character's backstory had nothing else in common with the Micronaut character.

Why Star Trek: Picard's New Main Ship Looks Like the Classic Enterprise

By James Whitbrook | Yahoo News!/Gizmodo
February 17, 2023

When we first met the U.S.S. Titan in Lower Decks, it was a Luna Class starship—but in its leap into live-action with this week’s premiere of Star Trek: Picard’s final season, she now looks very different... and more than a little familiar.

With a new command, the Titan we meet in Picard’s season three premiere has been refitted into what is called the “Neo-Constitution Class,” a riff on the Enterprise-A refit. “I saw this incredible starship designed by digital artist Bill Krause called the U.S.S Shangri-La, which was a Star Trek: Motion Picture-era class ship with a half saucer on top and an Excelsior-inspired Next Generation curve on the bottom, which I thought was really interesting,” Terry Matalas, Picard’s showrunner, recently told Variety. “I said to production designer Dave Blass, ‘I think the Titan should feel something like this.’”

Krause’s Shangri-La design appeared in last year’s Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendar, in an illustration depicting it as a 23rd-century Starfleet design. With Picard bringing the modern Trek continuity into the early 25th century, why was the nearly 200-year-old ship design the basis for this contemporary vessel? According to Matalas: cars. “I missed a proper saucer section on the top part of a starship, and I couldn’t help but notice how many cars have gone retro these days,” the showrunner continued. “And I remember, as I was driving around, I thought, ‘What if Starfleet did that?’”

Viz Puts Hundreds of Anime Episodes Online for Free

By Linda Codega | Yahoo! Entertainment/Gizmodo

Viz has uploaded hundreds of episodes to YouTube for free viewing. The catch is, of course, that these episodes are only available in the U.S. due to licensing restrictions. While that is a bummer for the rest of the world, American audiences get to enjoy seasons of classic anime without much standing in the way. If you’ve never heard of these anime or you’re just looking for a new watch, let me introduce you to the lineup.

We’ve got the classic isekai shojo action/romance InuYasha. Kagome, a reincarnation of an ancient priestess, gets transported into uber-supernatural feudal Japan where she teams up with the half-demon InuYasha. The entire series, and the movies, are available. Likewise, Sailor Moon—the magical girl blueprint—also has all episodes available.

It's too bad, it seems like the Micronauts or a couple of the characters would have been perfect in this movie. I haven't seen the movie, but as far as being relatable it might not have been worth the $ to rent characters that haven't been in a Marvel comic for 35+ years. It still woulda been cool to sneak Acroyear or Bug in there.

I lost count of the interviews I have seen of Star Trek actors, directors, etc., talking about franchise long ago. The one below is one I saw partially in a TikTok, so I searched and found a longer version on YouTube.

Actors like Patrick Stewart were not initially familiar with Star Trek before they joined the franchise. Other actors like LeVar Burton were real fans of the original series. Both grew greater respect or even love how their time with Star Trek impacted their careers or lives. You can see their appreciation during interviews, acknowledging how their iconic roles make them beloved among fans.

John de Lancie has had an atypical experience and relationship with Star Trek. He was never a regular cast member BUT his statute among fans is as tall-and-wide as any other main actor who played in any Star Trek media. Yet, he has neither really embraced fans 'wonderment' for his role as Q nor holds special significance for Star Trek in general.

That is why this interview of his interested me enough to share. It comes from a perspective of a guy who, for whatever reason, got the attention of a show he was clueless about and is still a part of decades later:

I think Bug would have really stood out and bumped up the movie's atmosphere just a tad more. Just my opinion. Please let us know of your take after catching the movie. :)

Hopefully I do not read like I did not care for the other characters. I did. Heck. I even quoted one of them in my post about the movie. It was a stupid line but perfect for the scene. I laughed my butt off.

My thinking was that it could have been the next film or TV franchise to explore, even after Ant-Man and Co left. It’s essentially an entire mini universe where you can do whatever you want. A blank slate.

Doubtful Marvel would lease the the rights to make a movie/streaming without owning the property out right. I think there was/is something already in development for Micronauts elsewhere, but that mighta been a few years ago. It does have possibilities, if done right.
