On a day when college basketball eclipses football for the attention of American sports fans, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is playing a big part in the college hoops world.

Jones’ alma mater, Arkansas, has hired coach John Calipari away from Kentucky, and Jones’ status as a booster has been cited as one of the reason that Calipari walked away from a college basketball blue blood to coach the Razorbacks.

Jones played college football at Arkansas and remains involved as a donor, and in the new world of college sports where so much success hinges on convincing players that wealthy donors will hook them up with lucrative NIL deals, a booster like Jones is attractive to players and coaches alike

John Calipari has struggled in getting Kentucky another national championship because his primary coaching strength is recruiting super talented freshmen and allowing them to beat teams with that talent. Problem is, that formula succeeded initially with a premier group of freshmen. The recruitment classes that followed have not been so great and--like every year--the best of the bunch declared for the NBA the next year.

Calipari's Kentucky teams began coming up short to more mature teams--teams with not as talented players as his but more mature and experienced. The transfer portal has increased the flow of experienced players to even more programs.

So! Jerry Jones gets credit for luring a head coach who, if he does not actually start coaching and recruiting players who will stick with his program for more than a year, will continue coming up short during March Madness. Yep. That's sounds like typical Jones work there.

That is a pretty poor reason. Calipari wanted out at Kentucky.

NCAA Basketball is all about dollars now. Even moreso than football because you can buy 3 starters in a day for a mill each and make a sweet 16.
Cal was looking for a soft-landing spot as he was on wobbly legs at Kentucy.
But Cal would have had his pick of non-top 5 type jobs and ARK becomes much more desirable if Billionaire boosters say they have your back.
ARK isn't going to be a power in football buit they could pretty easily in basketball if boosters commit an additional 5M a year.

Wild to see SMU steal USC's coach who stole ARK's coach who stole Kentucky's coach....
Likely opposite direction of how you'd value those 4 jobs but new money is good money in NCAA 2024.
 
That just further demonstrates Jerry's love for coaches with mediocre results.
 
I’m surprised he didn’t recommend Arkansas hire one of their own assistants. Maybe someone who has never been a HC before.
 
I guess "we won't call you, you call us" doesn't apply for the Jones Boys college teams.
 
I love how the ESPN article casually mentioned Jerry as a rich Arkansas alum, Florio got all trigger happy to turn it into an article. There's no actual detail or justification for listing Jerry other than someone using Google to look up where he went to college ages ago. Do you see Jones on the sideline at Hogs games high fiving the players? Is he rolling around in basketball jerseys and high tops?

As I understand it, coach Cal has a relationship with John Tyson. It's probably a case of Tyson not owning a pro team, so this is his way of defacto running one by dumping big coin into the coaching budget and NIL. It's high end entertainment expense. Naming Jerry just drives clicks for PFT.
