TRADED Cowboys trade for Joe Milton

A

Agreed. After all these years of mediocrity, it's amazing to me how worked up our fans still get about these basically pointless moves. This is a guy who someday "might" be a backup. People just keep licking up the slop Jerry keeps serving.
Truth.

Pats couldn’t wait to trade him.

And his cap hit is only 1M.

Lance came in 2023 though.
Yeah you’re right, I got the years wrong. But either way, 2023 or 2024, my point is the first year we had Lance he missed all preseason. So 2023 was kind of a wash for him considering no TC to work with him. Lance needed reps and we couldn’t give much to him the first year we had him. Then in ‘24 when we could have given him more reps we didn’t.

Milton is different because we have 3 solid years with him and he may get most of the first team reps in mini camp or TC due to Dak’s injury. So we’ll get a faster read on Milton. I’m excited to see what he can do in preseason games. Most likely he’ll get most of the reps.

That Dak contract was horrible. It just gave Jerry a reason not to draft a future franchise stud. He’ll just say, we got our next guy already.

on a positive note, if the Bills game was any indicator, looked way better than Trey Lance. Plus he keeps his eyes downfield and his footwork is better than Dak.

Thid guy wasnt going to make the Patriots roster. Could have gotten him for nothing!

The Pats are one of the worst teams in the league. They traded him because they have a new coaching staff and they went with a veteran backup.

Exactly.
Does not improve the team's backup QB position at all. I question him or Grier's ability to actually win games. Especially with this year's schedule.

Shoulda just kept Rush
Rush would have cost $6 million per year. Dallas barely pays starters that.

OK.,.. I’ve seen enough.. 6’ 5” and has an arm…. But man, coaches need to calm him down, cause he loves contact.. throwing some shoulders and initiated contact as a QB.

Start him….

This team has too many needs to get rid of picks for a backup QB. They could have got a veteran QB for a backup.
They didn't get rid of a pick. They swapped picks (a fifth for a seventh) and got a quarterback. They were going to use a Day 3 pick on a QB anyway. This way they got one who has shown he can play in an NFL game.

The negative is that they lose a year of contract, but finding even a backup QB on the third day of the draft isn't easy. Lots and lots of failed picks.

They gave a 5th for Milton so they got rid of a pick. A 5th is more valuable than a 7th. One game doens't show he can or can't play in the NFL. Dak is injury prone who will be 32 when the season starts. They should have gotten a veteran for a backup and start investing higher picks in the draft for the next QB. I hope Milton works out, but I don't think he is the next franchise QB.

That 5th was a compensatory pick. They still have their own 5th (149) and another comp pick (174). And now they have the first pick in the 7th round (217)

They didn't get rid of a pick. They moved down 46 picks and got Milton who has tremendous upside.
Going from 5th to 7th is losing draft position. The 5th is gone and they got a 7th. I wouldn't get too excited, Milton was a 6th pick that NE let go after one year. Remember Lance was a first round pick who people said had upside. I hope Milton works out, but I'm not buying he is the next big thing. He is a backup.

I think they view it as a player who showed promise in an NFL game that they believe can possibly develop into a quality player.

Their method of finding a starting QB has been UDFA and third-day picks for our last two starters, they are probably not about to change that now.

At one point in time, Cooper Rush was a rookie backup, so I don't think the team minds putting all its eggs in one basket. It will be interesting to see if they keep Grier as a backup or get some other veteran (even if they put him on the PS). I don't think they will do much, though, before they take a long look at Milton in the preseason.
