Historic picture of Tom Landry

His older brother (Robert) died as a bomber pilot during WW2 off the coast of Iceland before Tom enlisted.

Different times, different war, different men...

People forget that Major League Baseball basically had to shut down because over 500 pro baseball players and 2000 miner leaguers went into the armed forces.

I love the picture of Tom Landry on the field in his usual attire vs the current head coach of the Dolphins dressed like he's living in a homeless shelter, both men on the sidelines coaching...

He also survived a plane crash
Landry, Staubach, Lilly, Pearson, Dorsett. The mount Rushmore of why in large part, the NFL is what it is today. Yes, the Packers rival this, but that is it. Landry always gave us a fighting chance to pull out a win, even when things looked bleak. We went into every game with the mindset that we should win. This kind of culture now seems rare these days for us. Jimmy Johnson was that way. But for a short time. Landry was a Christian first and he walked that walk faithfully on and off the field. Bravery and commitment was like getting dressed in the morning to him, it's just how he rolled.

great pic! He was a leader even back then.
He led by example for the most part and was a great teacher. Tony Dungy once wrote a book I think called quiet confidence. I know he lived and coached that way. It worked. So did Landry. Expectations were high and standards of excellence was the norm. Those were the days. Now mediocrity is seemingly the standard of what good enough is around here. Fans should demand better.

Both of my grandfathers also served in WWII. All 3 were from deep South Texas from the Rio Grande Valley and proud fellow Texans!

Salute to all our veterans (part of the Greatest Generation) who fought to save the world during World War II.
My grandfather on my Dad's side was a POW in a Stalag in Bavaria in that war. He never would talk about it and we never even knew he was a POW until he passed away in 1990. Only then did we discover it after going thru his personal effects. Very humble man like Landry, a proud man.

Brother, thank you to your grandfather and family for his service and their sacrifice!
