Will we be dead last in defense this season?

I believe the D can be a top 15 unit, however, until we have at least a CFL level receiving corp,I can see a lot of 3 and outs that puts that D back on the field all day. Add an NFL receiver and our D will be top 15.

Concerned, yes.

But not writing off the defense just yet, Cowboys did eventually get the big guy in the middle they needed (and for which many here have been clamoring for the past 10 years at least) and got a quick LB that can maybe fill gaps and get to outside runners.

Also haven't totally given up on Mazi, though I think he's headed towards being a bust, some players take a while to "click" to the NFL, but this year is his last chance if I was a betting man.

And Kneeland is still young, should be able to recover from his injury by camp, with a few games experience last year he could make a good jump this year.

A lot to overcome, but we'll just have to wait and see...
You're considering a 7th round pick as a solution to this problem? Wow. He might not even make the team.

Last year we were the 2nd worst defense in the league. We just spent our only premium pick on offense when there were a number of good DTs available. The board is clamoring to spend the rest of the picks....on offense. Jerry spent bottom dollar on a bunch of FA rejects.

Is no one else concerned by the thought of having to watch our defense get abused week after week after week?

Hold up and let me hop in the DeLorean…

Ok…I’m back. Whew.

The answer is maybe. I can’t get specific about the future. Sorry.

The defense should be slightly better but not if there are injuries in the front 7. Depth at LB and DT is weak and the starters at MLB and DT are not good run defenders as is.

On one hand, I'm very concerned but on the other, there's nothing I can do about it . . .

tell me about it
I would, but I don't wanna get you flabbergasted and frustrated, like I am. :banghead:

Just remember -- suicide is NOT an option (although, sometimes it seems so.)

One day in the very distant future, in some other galaxy, things might improve!

Feel OK now? When things seem dark and dreary, they usually are! Go figure.

Last? In what regard? Total yards allowed? Is that how they still measure that?

Jerry believes in corners and pass rushers, whose games are mitigated when behind in a given game.

Can’t look at averages with this team. They are going to hang good numbers against bad teams they can get a lead on, then cover and rush more easily…or get absolutely murdered up the gut against the better teams that can both realize and execute that.

Either way there’s no tangible reason to believe they will be anything different than a ‘beat up on bad teams and get smacked by better ones’ type of team.

Get ready for top 10 lol. Maybe even better

On the contrary, I think by the playoffs they'll have one of the better defenses

It’s all true. We won 7 games with really nothing. Should have swept Wash as well. Health in the NFL is the name of the game. SF wasn’t healthy and neither were we. Detroit looked like the SB favorite for about 15 weeks and then the D injuries all caught up to them in the end.

Dak can win games. We need rookie Dak back. Play action, and rely on the running game. He’s not capable if it’s all on his shoulders unfortunately…..
Play action Dak is gone. He does not have the wheels he had as a rookie due to injuries. He is zero threat to run the ball making play action much less effective.

Half the defense was missing last season due to injuries. Then some of the backups as well.
Let’s see how healthy the will be by the end of this season.

As we know a few will start on PUP, or may be on it. But should be available no later than mid season.

Are you talking about the 7th rounder?

Overshown, Diggs and Revel arent starting at the beginning of the season.

It will be more like:
LB: Clark, Liufau/Sanborn, Murray
CB: Elam, Bland, Mukuamu

Not to mention we will have Mazi starting being backed up by a rookie and second yr 7th rounders.

I doubt it. We had significant injuries last year, though likely they will bleed into this year too. Two of our top three picks went to defense and we added some beef in the middle in the later rounds. We may not be a top defense but I don’t think we will be near the bottom either.
we still have injuries. the safties suck. Diggs is not recovering well enough, to a point where Jerry is openly criticizing him. Bland is coming off injury. Revel is going to start on PUP list. Overshown is injured yet again and he was the best LB we had, who was slightly above average. the DL is still a mess. Mazi is Mazi. he sucks. we lost Lawrence. and Kneeland is coming off injury.

and its a new scheme....

this defense could be bottom 3 again.
