Are we really better off at RB than last year?

...dont know for sure, but does feel we upgraded that area. Fresh 1 - 2 punch.

Like I've said before, dont care about Elite backs. Just RB's that get positive yardage and every now then hit HR"s.

In his first year Gibbs had 182 carries to Montgomery 219 carries. That is around 2-3 more carries a game for Montgomery over 17 games.

In his second year Gibbs had 250 carries to Montgomery's 185. Gibbs averaged 15 carries per/game

Both are considered RB #1's
I think Dallas will be able to run the ball successfully because of the Oline , and Cee Dee and Pickens being on the field together.Teams won't be able to stack the box ,Dallas will probably spread teams out and be able to run it.I look for the Cowboys to run out of the I formation between guards and center early in the year until the line starts to gel.Dallas should be hard to stop in short yardage and goal line.

Its hard sell for me…

Rico is coming off a 1K+ season with a lesser OL.

Williams has injury concerns, Sanders is mediocre and then 2 draft picks.

I’d say no but would be happy to be wrong if Williams comes back 100% and we hit on Blue.

Some of y’all have a much higher opinion of Dowdle than I do (or apparently the Cowboys head coach). I think he only looked decent by comparison—Zeke was that bad. I would be surprised if Williams or Sanders (or a combination of the two) couldn’t give us what Rico did. I think Blue is an upgrade to what we had behind Dowdle last year. Mafah is an unknown to me.

More speed this year. More depth than last year perhaps. People who can run outside and be receivers out of the backfield. But can any of them run between the tackles? Can they block blitzing linebackers in the passing game? Can they plow ahead for a couple of yards in short down situations?

I like this year's group better than last year's squad as a group. They bring more potential to the RB room. But at this time I would say that Rico Dowdle would be RB1 hands down if he were still a Cowboy.
Rico "2 TDs" Dowdle. Man, he was great between the 20s.

Gibbs is clearly the more talented RB - and clearly the more dangerous of the two- run or pass, he is more the instant homerun threat of the two
and he's a first round pick. Yet the Lions scheme/chose him off the bench behind Montgomery . Its a reason for that.
it may not be about just carries - reps may include blitz-blocking as well.,
The coaching staff knew/knows how to utilize both to get the best of both of them. That's partly why they been very successful in the running game

Ask Nate Newton about that.

Before Emmitt, Nate was JAG.

And OL will be a push. Booker is not a huge upgrade over Hoffman or Bass. At least not year 1. Guyton should be better. I guess we may have slightly better backups?
We’ll see I think the Oline got better last year when Martin went out

Steele started slow got better as the year progressed in the run game

I think booker is an upgrade over all last years rg play and hopefully guyton improves

I think the run game will be better. We definitely are faster

Williams was solid before his injury. Sanders wasnt running well behind the Eagles line, so I dont expect much of him. If we can get good run blocking up front, we will be way better off than last year.

IMO, no.

They are about the same. I probably would have just kept dowdle. Lots of change from coaches , blocking scheme, players. Hopefully they really get the ground game going.

Are we better at RB than last year? Yes. We had nowhere to go but up.
Is our RB room one of the better groups in the NFL? No.

Strengths in 2025 we did not have in ‘24:
  • Speed. Jaydon Blue brings the most speed we’ve had at RB since Tony Dorsett. But Blue is a 10-12 touches a game guy.
  • Depth is better, not great. Blue, Williams, Sanders, Deuce and Mafa are better than last year’s crop of Dowdle, Zeke, Deuce, Freeman.
Weaknesses we still have:
  • Williams and Sanders have been declining for two years. Will they be better here? Long shot. There’s a reason they were cheap.
  • Blue is a great addition but he’s not a 3 down back on every possession. We probably need another back to join this committee.
