The Fan on FA Sam Williams future as a Cowboy

Being the top rated edge on one of the worst pass rushing teams in the NFL isnt exactly cause for celebration.

This is the problem with the fans of the Cowboys. They think like Jerry and overvalue our talent.

How does his grade stack up on the Houston D?
Well, Houston hired a pretty good DC as their HC. That has a lot to do with it.

I have never understood the philosophy of giving a “project” player who needs “time to develop” four full years to develop….then after they do not develop, say, “let’s re-sign this guy”.

To me this is exactly the kind of thinking that has given us the last 30 years.
The problem with players like Williams is that he makes that amazing play just often enough that it makes people think, "Hey, this kid could be special if ........", but "........" never happens.

The Cowboys' defense has struggled because their performance has constantly looked like sine waves (up for some periods and way down for others) every game and players like Williams have constantly contributed to that.

In fact, that's where his consistency has been .. consistently being inconsistent.

In layman terms .. he's a tease. It's time to move on.

I am all for re-signing him, maybe to a 1 year deal for $3.5 million.

He looked much better the last half of the season and we cannot forget he was coming off a full season of IR. I have said many times, Diggs, Williams and Revel all looked like guys coming off big injuries last year and we've seen guys come back strong after that recovery year. I am willing to take a $3.5 million risk on Sam Williams.

He's a backup rotational player. We need starters all over the defense. Maybe they sign Clowney, but he is older and I am not sure he is what they need either. When you look at all the holes in the roster you can see this is not a 1 year project. Give Sam 1 show me deal and see what happens.

having him off the team will improve team football iq and uncontrollable chaos he causes.

Maybe he was a victim of horrible defensive coaching the last two years? Maybe the new coaching staff can get something out of this under performing slug! And just maybe monkeys fly out of.....

Cowboys fans have been conditioned to believe in a “scarcity mentality” by the leaders of this organization. They talk that way all the time.

Here are some examples of “scarcity mentality”:
  • “If we cut this guy (starter or backup player who has done nothing or almost nothing) who are we going to get?” Answer: I don’t know. How about someone else who could possibly give us more? We already know this guy couldn’t, so why keep him? Surprise! There are lots of talented football players out there.
  • “If we sign this free agent, we will be in cap hell in 2 years.” Answer: How about the rams, eagles, and chiefs? All have newly acquired Lombardis and have been in and out of “cap hell” multiple times. And between them have won 50 playoff games in the cap era.
Stephen Jones acts like the cap is un-manipulatable. Meanwhile the better FOs say, “Hold my beer” and put together a great roster.

Putting even more succinctly: The GOAL of a serious NFL franchise should be to win a SB not have a “great cap situation”.

I agree. I think there could still be some untapped potential.

The physical ability is certainly there.

He was giving us 4.5 sacks a year in a rotation. It’s possible that he’s a better fit as a 3-4 rush end than he was as a 4-3 DE.

And I give everyone the benefit of the doubt when it comes to last year. Eberflus and his staff made every defensive player on the roster worse.

They’re all better just by the former coaches’ absence.

I defer to CP. if he thinks he can work with him and the deal is fair, bring him back.^this
^This^. The key here is can Parker get into his head fast enough to determine if he is a guy he can work with.

In human interactions lots of people lie or spin their story. It's in their nature to do so for self-preservation purposes.

But tape doesn't lie. Training camp can lie. It does every year with all the hullabaloo we see about players who show well in camp, but never show up in the regular season.

Price wise Sam has to give a discount.

Roster wise Sam has to show that he is serious about football and it the only thing in his life that matters. IF he has something else that matters then he should move on from football and pursue that.

While I really want to buy into this theory, the reality is Williams just had the worst year of his career played about half his snaps as a 3-4 edge player. How much of an issue was it coming back from injury? That could be the X factor in all this, but reviewing the snap counts from last season Williams actually seems to have better games in a more traditional DE role with his and in the dirt. When he was playing heavy LB snaps this past season which was mostly early in the year is when he struggled the most.

No. He’s actually just never looked good.

He’s a mental midget, who got by on his physicals in college.

When he went against the best, his physicals weren’t enough. So he looked average.

Then you throw in is off field antics, his dumb penalties, and his apparent lack of wanting to play football other than for a paycheck. Yeah. He’s trash. Has been trash, and was yet another waste of a second rounder on a guy with character issues.
I disagree. 4.5 sacks in a reserve role showed he had something. That production probably would’ve been good enough to be second in sacks here last year. You guys in one breathe say Everflus was trash but won’t blame him for why the whole unit was bad.

Man we see this exactly the same way. I’m convinced guys like Murray and Wilson can’t play. Some want to write it off as bad picks and in the end that may be right. But all of us felt better about guys like Overshown, Liufau, Sam, Kneeland, etc. before Eberflus got here. I’m not saying don’t upgrade the unit just saying I want to see more especially from a guy like Sam on the edge in a 3-4.

Triple like! His biggest supported Dan Quinn, took him out of the rotation. That's all we need to know.
When did that happen? He wasn’t here last year and the year before Sam missed the whole season. When did Dan take him out of the rotation?

Man you just don’t give up do you? Sam Williams is a bust. He’s a moron, talks more than he shows up on the field, and makes at least one boneheaded play a game.

Williams has been bad since he got here it’s not just Eberflus.

You just refuse to give up on any cowboy.

If Williams played in Houston he would have been cut. Stop bringing up his sack totals. The whole unit sucked. He couldn’t even win the starting end position on this terrible team last year. What’s that tell you?

I don’t know anything about the guys intellect or him outside of football. I don’t listen to post game interviews so you could be right in that regard. I like his physical tools and yes I’d like to see him in the new scheme change. If it doesn’t work oh well. He will get it. If low risk potential high reward.

You’re way too passionate about this lol. I’d like to see him in a new scheme. If they move on I swear life will go on lol.

So TMC let me ask two quick questions…
  1. Are you saying there will no other player out there as good or better than Sam Williams in the draft or in FA?
  2. So we must have Sam Williams next year in order to get significantly better as a defense?

There is something sad about a young, physically gifted player not being able to take a starting spot after four years on the team.

It will be up to Parker and his defensive line staff of Marcus Dixon and Demeitre Brim to determine if they can work with Williams and if there is any value there on the second year coming back from ACL and MCL surgery.
