Comparing 2025 FA moves and trades to 2026 moves so far

It’s late March in what is supposed to be a “bust the budget” and “different” off-season for our FO. Which made me wonder about how this 2026 off-season of Free agency and trades compares (so far) to last year’s off-season.

2025 Off-season New Free Agency Acquisitions:

What looks amazingly similar this year compared to 2025 is once again only signing one free agent to a multi-year contract. And there will certainly be a few more FA signings before the 2026 off-season ends. But the only ones left are of the “dumpster dive” lovariety. And I expect a trade or two perhaps as well.

But how is this off-season (so far) so much different than last year?
One man's trash is another man's treasure....many players flourish on new teams, new schemes and knowing it could be their last chance. I'll wait til the pads come on, before I start comparing.

Yes there is a decent chance our defense will be better. My question had more to do with why should any Cowboys fan be confident that we will be better?
I am 100% confident we will be better. I think we are finally seeing a serious effort to change the culture. I think that started with trading Parsons, but the 2025 season was the collateral damage, especially the timing. Simply put, Eberflus and Schotty misjudged his impact on covering up a ton of warts his talent covered. Things got out of control in weeks 1-2, and Eberflus never recovered. By mid-season, he lost his lockroom.

None of that will be an issue to start this season. The defense may or may not have better overall players, but I'm 100% confident it will be a better TEAM with better leadership and culture. That's what you want ( see Seahawks, Pats and Broncos' defenses). We will add a few more quality players who I think could be the core of the team. I'm not too concerned about the players above coz they are so-called attrition players Jerry brings in and out every season with the hope that 1-2 may stick ( all have 1-year contracts ). Jovonte Williams, Solomon Thomas, and Clowney would be those players from last season.

So yeah, I think we are already a better team and defense and still have the draft in front of us. Granted, our bar is pretty low, so better isn't saying much but .......

Disagree. I think trading Parsons was 100% on Jerry.

Where did you hear that Eber/Schotty wanted to trade him? First I've heard of that.

Agree that we should be better.

Not drastically different although I do believe they were legitimately in for a LB but their lack of conviction and experience in free agency nixed that opportunity. The major difference though is that they did sign one free agent to a real multi-year contract of over 10 million per year which they haven’t done for more than a decade? Furthermore, the trade for Gary and the restructuring of the contract also amounts to a multi-year commitment (unlike the Pickens trade for example). I’m hoping the trade for Brooks or another good LB before the draft and then I do think we can look at the off-season as an adjusted approach of sorts. In my opinion they should have been more aggressive with offers on the LB front but baby step I suppose. We will see what the rest of free agency holds and then of course the draft. Currently, I’m not really impressed but I don’t rule out that we could consider it a successful free agency period by the end of it either. I never felt that way last year.

With no pass rush and no talent at DB, you have to play zone. Come on, people, you cannot man up w/ players who are poor at coverage and no pass rush. This is Football 101 stuff.
With players that had no clue how to play zone it was worse than taking chances in man. Why was there no talent at these places? Why didn't any of the acquisitions that we made actually fit Eberflus' system?

No, it was not worse, it was the only thing that could be done.

Bolded: Because we have the worst GM in the NFL.

Not lack of conviction/experience, it all comes down to their complete inability to evaluate players. I mean, they have less then zero clue.

How ANYONE can still step up and defend this front office is mindboggling.

And to no ones surprise, the defense begins as early as post #5.

Again, how am I depending the FO. You are making stuff up again.
30 years mantra, I do not live in the past like that to fuel my dislike.
I DO NOT like the FO or their ways. But I DO NOT hate on them every time they take a breath.

How long will it take you to understand that. Oh, you will not or can not.
how long will you keep forgetting something very well proven
THOSE THAT IGNORE THE PAST ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT

I’m not necessarily disagreeing with you. But why do you think this year’s defense will be “pretty solid”? Hopefully it will but what gives you that confidence?
Parker
Thompson helps the secondary out a ton
Revel is fully acclimated / recovered
Overshown is fully recovered
D-line should be good
Cobie Durant could be a sneaky good signing.

Reasons for concern -
DB group as whole has questions, especially with Blands foot surgury.
Position changes, will they be a positive or negative for the team?

The closer we get to draft day, I think McCoy very well could be the pick at 12.

Yes there is a decent chance our defense will be better. My question had more to do with why should any Cowboys fan be confident that we will be better?
If they move from #32 overall up to #20 is that really that much of an improvement?

Those of you still hoping Jerry changed should clearly undertand he is a liar. Whatever he says it a lie mixed with some truth which is the worse case type of liar. He is the number one enemy of this great franchise. He is changing the legacy of the Cowboys to glitz and glamour with no substance. Dallas Clownboys

FA was pretty weak from year past years as far as who was available. Two teams seemed to dive in most Carolina and Vegas.

The hope is not this all star cast but the hope that CP is the real deal. The laziness last season of just hiring Flus without even examining it was a horrible mistake. Hopefully taking their time they got the right DC and that will change a lot.

How do you figure?

Last offseason they got Pickens, Javonte Williams, and Dante Fowler.

This offseason they got Thompson, Gary, and Cobie Durant.
The focus on defense is why I figure.
And 3 starters on defense which is what was needed. Fowler was the only guy on defense you mentioned from last year, and we see he is not here as of today.

And others, some good depth.
Obgonnia, Howell at QB instead of retread Grier.
Hennessy to replace Hoffman, so a trade off.
PJ Locke

Kept Bass, and Sam Williams to many fans dislike. Brought back Wheat, but may be a TC body, but still decent depth at this point.
Kept J. Williams to a decent contract, Davis,
and a few other decent Fa's of there own.

The only difference makers available for the defense were Crosby and Hendrickson at edge or Lloyd at LB. And that is even debatable. How much of a difference maker was Dean for the Eagles? When he was healthy that is.

There were some good players. I honestly put Lloyd and Dean in that category. Maybe even Hendrickson....he was having a less than normal year before he suffered his injury. No guarantee the guy the Ravens paid a lot of money for will be the guy that averaged 15 sacks a year.

Additionally, it appears as if the coaching staff has a plan for what they are looking for and the players we have acquired fit that mold. We had a defense where the players in the secondary were much more suited for man coverage and we tried to force them to play zone. The decision to get rid of Parsons on the eve of the season was one that was hard to recover from. As the season went on we tried patching holes with Clowney and Wilson. Clowney was of course pretty effective but Wilson was a waste. Adding Williams at the deadline was too little too late.

The hope is that we are addressing the things we need to turn the defense around. A new staff with fresh ideas, players that actually fit the system, and an actual plan. The draft should bring us two more starters...most likely a LB and a CB. There are some excellent depth pieces that should be available in the draft as well. It would be nice to get a solid veteran LB by trade or with a post June release but that probably isn't happening.
Good post. Too bad many will not see it this way.

No one is defending the FO.
They just to not HATE on them in everything they do.

ANYONE that can't see that they have done better so far this year in mind boggling.

Just like you ignoring what I post. As you do with not comprehending my post about I do not like the FO and they way they do. But do not hate on them all the time either.
But yet here you are posting about it.

how long before you will forget this once again. 1 minute?

Not lack of conviction/experience, it all comes down to their complete inability to evaluate players. I mean, they have less then zero clue.
They evaluate players just fine. Their problem is they can’t negotiate in free agency (or at all really) because there are 30 other teams that are also allowed to make offers to prospective players. They refuse to make aggressive offers that beat out other teams because they are terrified of overpaying players. Hence they rarely get their targets. They end up overpaying their own players too because they always wait to the last minute to sign them but they end up keeping them because other teams can’t compete for them. Maybe if they at least have the intention of signing free agents the next few years they will find out how it’s done but wouldn’t hold my breath.
