Building a Defense Begins Thursday; How to Enjoy It

The Cowboys need to trade down while attempting to acquire draft picks for next season, which will be considered much stronger talent-wise.

They could trade #20 for a 2nd round pick this draft plus next years 1st round pick.

If this is supposed to be a rebuild, which I don't think it is, then the Cowboys would jump at the chance for an additional 1st round pick in 2027.

And who knows, if that team tanks then the Cowboys have a shot at a top 5 pick in 2027.

They have done quite a bit last year and this year to get this defense rebuilt. And now have the draft to do more.
And a new DC to go along with it.

It is not what the fans want, But what if it is and turns out to be better than what many feel.

They may have just replaced what they lost must they are an upgrade for sure. Including some depth.

Get 3 solid players in this draft. It is all looking up.

I think going in wanting 3 solid players is more doable than hitting on two star players will be.

Now all the talk is about which players will fall or rise and whether the Cowboys should trade up, trade down, or sit tight. I’m sure we have all gotten a little caught up in it and probably a little anxious.

Here’s a realization I came to today that has me ready to thoroughly enjoy this year’s draft whatever happens.

Our offense is not perfect, but elite when healthy. Our defense absolutely sucked last year.

• We have already improved our safety room
• We have already improved our CB room
• We have already improved our DL depth and replaced our C depth

While we may wish for one of the supposedly super elite defenders, so does every team outside of the top 8 teams in the draft order, but no player is a guarantee. Even if we sit where we are at 12, 20, 92, and 112, or if we trade down for additional picks, while we may not draft Reese, Bailey, Styles, Downs, or even Delane or Bain, the draft runs deep into the fourth round with solid players at Edge, LB, CB, and S. It is also deep at TE and WR.

Whatever happens, as long as The coaches have collaborated with McClay and the scouts and the board has been built properly, we are going to add solid defenders who will improve this defense. That’s almost a certainty considering how bad it was last year. A super blue chipper, if he pans out, is awesome, but there is no excuse for not improving every level of this defense, even if LB waits until 92 or 112. Add that improvement to the quality parts returning healthy and a better coaching staff and scheme.

I’m more and more excited to see which players the Cowboys are really targeting and to then dig in and read more and more about the players not named in the big 6 and what they will bring to the new scheme.

Not sure we improved our defensive line depth. We replaced Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas with Ogboniia and Bullard, not exactly major players and maybe not as good as the players they are replacing. We replaced Clowney with Gary, which seems to be a comparable swap.

Safety should be better with Jalen Thompson. Corner should be slightly improved with Durant.

But I feel we brought in DTs that fit the scheme much better than the guys we sent down the road.

I wouldn’t be upset. If that happens, I’d expect a trade of Pickens for more picks. My point is we can improve the defense throughout the draft. Unlike others, I’m hoping we don’t take one of the top CBs at 12. CB is perhaps the deepest position in the draft.

Personally, I’m hoping we do not draft a CB in round one at all, but certainly not at 12. CB is an extremely deep position in this draft. We do not need to have the best one. I would love to move one of our picks enough to get into round 2. Unless the organization truly loves the player on the board at 12 and plans to build a position group around him, add another pick or two and get more help.

Building a defense has already started through free agency. Those FA adds and subtractions will matter. However, Thursday is the start of a hug part of the defensive rebuild. It's important for the FO to follow up the draft with a few more FA acquisitions to fill our final holes. Jerry failing to see that that gets done could mean disaster for this coming season.

I really like the idea of a couple or LBs in round 2, but the cards may not fall that way. This LB class is pretty deep. We could probably add LB upgrades in round 4 and possibly 5.

Not trying to take anything away, but most selections by the Cowboys over their franchise history did not happen in the top 5 picks. Most players are not drafted in the first round. Good write up all the same.

And also it continues they will now also pursue trades Probably your defense probably aren't better than they weren't on I just haven't landed yet but after the bath it starts moving on to query to bring in their fragrance off the fridge and literally all been the same for the last three weeks not a lot of movement or transactions...

It all begins today yes but this is the restart of the offseason where he should pick up quicker..

Assuming we dont move in the first at all, I wouldnt be surprised at all if we take someone like Proctor at 20 if he is availble.

I haven't really looked at these individual players, so I can't comment if I actually like Proctor, but I'm not opposed to picking an offensive tackle at 20, truth is that our tackle situation remains a giant question mark. They need to keep trying until they fix it, instead of their usual process of waiting 3 years after a high pick completely proves he's a bust. If they end up with too many bona fide starting tackles, they will have an easy time finding a trading partner. No problem.
