Drafted by Cowboys No. 23 pick - UCF Pass Rusher Malachi Lawrence

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/nfl/article/nfl-draft-grades-2026-first-round-002316356.html

23. Dallas Cowboys (via trade with Eagles): Malachi Lawrence, Edge, UCF

Grade: C-

Lawrence is a good, linear athlete who has some juice as a pass rusher, but he wasn’t so good that it covers up the lack of impact in the other areas of his game. He doesn’t turn the corner against tackles consistently, so he might need to adjust his game to have a consistent impact as a pass rusher. There’s upside here, but the floor is very low.
I see they gave Taco Faulk an 'A' to the Titans. I'll stick with the pass-rusher that play's in a 3-4 Scheme, where his coach is also in Parker's defensive set-up. Sounds like a Scheme fit (or at least Scheme Familiarity). .....and if that story of Parker sending picks to McClay, is true, sounds like we grade it higher than C-

I’ve seen some people knock this pick just because he’s coming out of University of Central Florida, and honestly.....it’s a tired argument.

Are we really still acting like players can’t excel unless they come out of the SEC? The NFL has plenty of receipts of guys from “smaller” schools or conferences who’ve balled out at the highest level. At some point, we’ve gotta move past helmet scouting. Talent is talent.

Watch the tape, not the conference.

Things to remember about the Malachi Lawrence pick -
  • He’s very athletic with lots of upside. That’s a plus for sure.
  • He also needs some time to develop. I doubt he’s an instant plug in star.
  • He’s probably a 2nd round talent but the Cowboys probably felt he was good enough to take at 23 and wouldn’t be available on Day 2.
He was not a completely dominant player in the Big 12 last year although he had many good moments.

I saw him play a few games last year (as a Texas Tech and Big 12 fan) and his best games were vs West Virginia and Baylor where he got 4 of his 7 sacks for the season. Baylor and WV were not very good last year.

I’m not at all knocking “MLaw”. I think he’s a good pick. But the drop off between him and David Bailey or Arvell Reese is size-able. For example, Bailey had 14.5 sacks last year and 19.5 TFLs. Lawrence had 7 sacks and 11 TFLs.

Good pick. Probably going to need some time to develop into his talent. Much like (coincidentally) DLaw, who needed a season to develop into a viable impact player.

The knock is he’s a 1st round pick.

He’s expected to start.

He had the one good season of college ball.

The way to look at it is to add the two fourth-round picks that are still TBD. Those are important, and I’ve already mentioned that both fourth rounders the Cowboys have taken are substantial.

Maybe they picked him a bit high at 23, but the real question is what they do with those two fourths alongside this pick. I can’t say how it will turn out, but Parker made this choice because he wanted this guy. He believes he’ll be in the rotation as a rookie and play meaningful snaps. That has to work out, especially since we don’t even know if guys like Downs or Arvel Reese any good as rookies will be, some players take time to develop.

I say this because I’ve seen it happen with the Giant, Thibodeaux is a good player, and Carter was a solid pick last year, one I really wanted, but neither is living up to their draft status so far. It doesn’t matter what a player’s name is or where they were picked; they all have to prove themselves. That’s why someone like Marvin Harrison Jr. got criticized last year, he was good, but not what the draft hype said he’d be.

We saw it with Chase Young too: even with seven sacks as a rookie, he didn’t quite live up to his draft billing, though he wasn’t a bad player. It’s commo, we’ve seen number one overall picks flop. I still think taking Clowney first overall was a mistake, and plenty of quarterbacks have busted at that spot. The draft is an inexact science, and for all we know, this kid could get 10 sacks this year if the scheme and coaching click for him. From boom to bust, anything’s possible for the players picked yesterday across all teams.

All this feedback it's just hyperbole it's our opinion Whether it was a reach or not or whether he's going to be good or bad it doesn't matter..

The Mazi and Guyton picks have everyone nervous now.

We need to hit on our picks.

Everyone pretending we don’t need a LT.

Larry Allen played college football at Butte College (1989–1990) in Oroville, California, and subsequently at Sonoma State University (1992–1993). He was a dominant Division II All-American at Sonoma State before being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1994 NFL Draft.

That doesn't mean trying to find the perceived hidden gems and trying to be smarter than everyone by picking somebody from a smaller school is the way to go But if they feel like he's best for this team and it's Parker's pick he's going to have to live with this forever how long his career is with the Cowboys because they're attached now...

I still don't think he's a bust use Taco and mazi maybe Hill Guyton still has time to develop and whether that's starting right tackle or not sure they might need to pick up a veteran swing tackle that can be used in spot duty as a starting left tackle I get that but we have 5 months till Game 1 so let's just back off the big needs because they will be filled very soon Lots of stuff happen next week after the draft like everything's been on hold in a holding pattern the last three weeks a lot of those free agents those lists have not moved at all in about 3 weeks all these teams been focusing on the draft will now go back to fill the other things.

Thats good to hear. My issue is that there was no talk about this guy in round 1 leading up to the draft. He was a day 2 pick that people really started to notice when the pads went off and and workout shorts went on. I think if we had passed, he was dropping to mid round 2. So, poor draft value at 23. We should have taken a CB.
Not sure why you think that since it has been mentioned that San Fran wanted him at 27 and the team said three other teams said we got their guy. Now, that could just be bluster to make the pick look better but it’s hard to know where teams actually value a player. He went at 23 so I bet his value with teams was close to that.

If you haven’t seen today’s Locked on Cowboys podcast with Marcus Mosher and Landon McCool, check it out and see how excited these two are (and the “why”) around both of the first round picks

So we reached by drafting him at 23, how? Because we didn’t get him at 26?

His college tape reminds me a LOT of D Ware coming out….
